Currently having problems with passenger bank of cylinders and exhaust. Sounds like it might be missing/exhaust leaks and an occasional back fire at highway speeds. And small hickups at idle. Oil smelled of gas and just changed Oil and fuel smell returned and oil is thinning out. Messed with timing about 15 minutes ago and it's still not sounding right. Going to check compression. If compression checks good what would my next step be? Change plugs/wires. Have correct Oddfire Distributor cap in process of taking a look at the rotor and points.

I'd be worried about the gas in the oil problem first. Sounds like your fuel pump is leaking internally into the oil.

:iagree: only other thing that i can think of would be a cylinder not firing and the un burnt fuel is going past the rings, this would be my first concern, thined out oil will wipe the bottom end out, then a rebuild or worse a motor will be in order

have you moved your spark plug wires for any reason, I tried to point the vacume pot on my dad's cj5 in a better direction and moved the plug wires one position. (I forgot about the odd fire thing) so every other cylinder fired at the right time and the other three where off. ran about like you describe. poor idle, loss of power, occasional hickup.

Went to parts store today to get fuel pump. Got one on order. Tried moving the timing yesterday by turning the distributor. That didn't seem to fix the elephant farting in a bath tub sound from the passenger side cylinders. Would moving the plug wires over one post on the cap fix this? Or do I have to move the plugs over two post?

ok let me try, you need to get #1 cylinder to top dead center on compression stroke, and route the plug wires in the firing order, one of the other jeep nuts in here will be able to tell you the dist rotation,i "think it is counter clockwise" and i "think" the firing order is 165432, this should give you a good start. although i would highly recomond either a service manual or someone to back me up or correct me on this one

I have gone throught the techs here and I'm one hundred percent correct on the cap and the order of the plugs and the wires. The passenger side revs up with an oocassional rap and when I take my foot off the throttle it will idle down with the elephant farting in a bath tub sound. Driver side sounds great. I have headers and both sides are separate. What is the idle supposed to be set at for this engine with it bored .4 over. And whats the timing supposed to be other than between ten and eight? Right now I've the timing at 7. I don't plan on changing the oil till I get the new fuel pump on Monday. Does anyone else out there have a 225 that has a passenger side exhaust that sounds bad?

if it is just on the passanger side sounds like a plug wire breaking down,or a fouled out plug that is firing some of the time, run the compression check you mentioned and examine the plugs while you are at it,at least you will be able to pin point the cylinder that is giving problems, have a 225 here but it is single exaust
