The bracket with the "fingers" is for the stay cable---and the bracket of the original question is for the a brake return spring.

Borrowed the photo below from a ECJ5 thread...Discussion: Purpose Of Stay Cable
But, I think what is labeled "clutch return..." is for the brake pedal arm return spring.

Now my head hurts too. The bracket does look like a return spring, but the mounting location doesn't compute. I need a bracket for the park brake arm return as mine is missing (maybe?). I don't have a stay cable on my 70 CJ and the anchor point for the parking brake cable is forward of the arm. Does this bracket mount on the back crossmember thus providing the return pull.on the cable? My clutch return cable spring is directly behind the pedal on the outside of the frame.

The bracket in question in your post #988 is for the brake pedal return spring. Be sure you don't confuse it with E-brake/parking brake questions.

I'd suggest starting a new thread for answers to questions other than your original of post #988.

for the e-brake return spring, there is a place on the frame aft of the transmission where the spring and extension go. here are a couple of pictures:

I went out and looked. This is correct.

I was wrong earlier about the e-brake. Maybe thinking of some other vehicle.

Also a “L bracket” on the front of the jeep under the grill. Thanks for the look, Ray.

The plug is a common 12V plug. Maybe hooked to the brake lights for towing. Not stock. I have a few...

Just spoke with PO about the connector, he knew nothing about it, so he says it’s more tha 50 years old at least when his father-in-law had the jeep for a few years before the PO acquired it. I’m not removing it, I like old stuff and will investigate it further, thanks again.

U-joints with a grease fitting in the middle of the cap exist IIRC. From the Tom Woods web site:

    upload_2019-9-2_15-23-22.png

A plug would reduce height of the fitting, usefull in some applications I suppose.

There are needle grease fittings, sometimes used for U-joints:

Possible that's what you have, with a slot instead of a hex.
