    From the all knowing Wikipedia
    No firm date given, but it indicates 1970.

    Yep, pretty sure 8405 is the prefix for CJ-6. Not sure why your CJ-5 would have that prefix. No sign of the frame being shortened is there?

    Please check the VIN you entered here, it doesn't look right to me.

    Glad it helped out.

    1970 model probably built either September or October 1969. F134 4 cylinder correct?

    Thank you for your time and help. What month did the new year come out from the factory? Was it October?

    I thought 2(or 3 depending on F4 or V6)66906 would be either August or September 1970.

    X60577 = Aug 1969
    X60996 = Sept 1969
    X61439 = Sept 1969
    X62713 = Oct 1969
    There is an oditity in the table though...

    I would think 261998 would be September or October 1969. Am I looking at something wrong here Randy?

    If it was built Sept / Oct 1969 it is a 1970 model year vehicle according to the factory and the government.

    Randy pointed out to me that the V6 and F4 model serial numbers do not coincide, so he may have a better estimate as to what month it was actually built. I do have some documentation that does show your Jeep was built after the serial number stated for the 1970 model year switch, and for the purposes of registration could have been registered as a 1970 model. I'm not sure if it could have been registered as a 1969, but it is possible. Either way it really doesn't matter much.

    A little more investigation after your question about the frame possibly being shortened, you were right! It appears the frame was shortened just ahead of the front spring hanger on the rear spring and a CJ 5 tub was installed. The job was very well done, I would of never found it without your suggestion about the frame and the CJ 6 serial number.

    Re: !! See this thread for VIN questions !!

    Hello. I'm new to the forum and have a CJ-6 inquiry.

    I'm trying to figure out what year this CJ6 is, and what rear axle is installed in it. VIN is 8405 25523. I've looked at the article on the first page, and have searched around on Google till my fingers hurt, but can't find out what year this Jeep was manufactured. I think it was manufactured after 1962, but that's just because 1962 is the last year that I can find serial numbers (until 1971, when the serial numbers are larger than this one).

    Any help out there? I sure would appreciate it!

    Built November of 1963 so it's a 1964 model CJ6.

    Serial number makes no sense!!

    I have an alleged '67 CJ5. The serial number is 8305A218244. The CJ5 looks unmolested for the most part, is a normal, left-hand drive V6. This serial number makes no sense to me. It seems to show it as a right-hand drive!!?? Also, the engine number in the serial number doesnt match anything. Any help on this?? Any ideas?? The V6 has acast iron adapter behind it that is about 3 inches thick, but looks stock. The books that I have (including original service manuals), dont show this adapter. I also have the T-86 tranny, but the top cover has T-90 cast into it. Odd. The shifter cane is correct for a V6 T-86, bent as expected. Maybe they used T-90 top covers for the T-86?? I also have a unilateral braking master cylinder. Is this normal for a '67? My guess is that it was an option for a dual?? Also, should it have vaccuum or electric wipers? Again, maybe an option for electric? Any insight is appreciated. Thanks, CJ

    11 digit VIN:

    83 = Universal CJ5
    05 = Open Body
    A = 225 V6
    218244 = Sequential serial number. Built August of 1966, likely 1967 model year.

    Re: Serial number makes no sense!!

    Thanks. From what I have read, the number after the "A", the 6th digit, should designate right or left hand drive, etc, and my "2" would designate right-hand drive. The next number, the 7th digit, should be the engine code. I have a "1" there, which doesnt "fit" what the lists show. Are the 6th and 7th numbers NOT indicative of anything, like I see in the serial number decoders that are out there on the web?? Why would they say that the 6th and 7th digits indicate drive side and engine code if they really dont? That is what had me confused. Any idea there?

    Thanks. I get it now. Those "other" charts do not indicate that the rules of the 6th and 7th digits ONLY apply for 13 digit serial numbers. You have solved my mystery. Do you know the answers to my other questions about the tranny topcover, bellhousing to tranny adapter, and brake master cylinder?
