This is my new favorite tool in the shop. I followed this guy's instructions to make a small sandblaster out of a soda bottle and a $5 air gun from HF. It works incredibly well.

The only thing I did differently was make a smaller hole in the tube because I'm using actual sand (left over from our pool filter), not walnut shells like he did in the video. I can always make it bigger if I feel it's necessary.

A 3/16" drill bit was a perfect press fit for the tube.

Ugh...This guy needs to blow his nose.

I like the DIY, but it looks a little cumbersome? I think I'd just pop the extra $15 and be done.

I have the older model of that from HF. Works good for spot blasting small areas. Hopper is empty in a hurry but, I've used it and like it.

Cumbersome maybe, but the size of the hopper is completely variable (user preference) and thus blows away your “premium” HF model. :p

I can foresee using the ubiquitous 2 liter soda bottle on this contraption with good results. And hey, when not needed the air gun portion can revert... back to an air gun. Fabulous.

    Thanks ITLKSEZ!

The only problem is the tip will wear down. But I don't think you could even buy a sand blaster tip for $5...

I have a small hand sand blaster with a brush round the blaster area. It's suppose to reuse the blast media, like the old air powered spark plug cleaners...

    Very clever idea...

That pop bottle will sure make your hand tired if your going to be doing much work. Also I assume this is for open air blasting. Cause no way would that work in any sort of a cabinet. I'll stick with mine a OSB cabinet and a replacement gun from Eastwood. I think including buying the gloves at HF I have less then $75.00 in my cabinet.

I prefer the cabinet for individual parts as well. Where this type of thing shines is say, on the body seams, where you want to get in there and knock off the paint or rust and you can't really get in there to sand the area easily. I did exactly this at the seam between the bed floor and wheel houses in the back of the tuxedo Park. Easy peasy and very effective.

I like the soda bottle hopper but, the small hopper with the cap on it is nice for hard to reach areas where you aren't holding the gun upright all the time.

I have a real pressure pot blaster made from some pipe fittings/valves, and an old air starter tank from one of our old Mack trucks. It holds about 70lbs of media, and takes as much air as you can supply. The ceramic tips are one of the most costly items, and determine output and air cfm used. I've run it off a 125 cfm Sulliair compressor with 1/4"+ tips, or portable compressors with 1/8" tips.
I turned my own tip holder on the lathe, as well as the top fill plug. I probably have less than $50 invested in the blaster, but the hood and respirator are nearly double that.
