I am ready to install new emergency brake shoes on my 68 CJ5 rebuild. If you look at the picture of the old brakes you can see there is a considerable amount of oil on the old shoes.

Please any thoughts on what I might do before I put the new shoes on to avoid the new shoes looking like the old ones or could they look like that just from 40 + years of neglect? There were no obvious leaks in the transmission / transfer case. Right now the body is off the frame and I would prefer to do any maintenance now and not have to deal with this later when the body is back on.

    Thank you for any suggestion,

That oil is more than likely from your t-case leaking out of that seal. If that second pic is your t-case all cleaned up, I would recommend a rebuild kit for the t-case from Novak, unless you have already replaced all the seals and bearings. I had mine all cleaned up, replaced the pads, and seals but not the bearings...about 2 months later it's leaking again...pads are covered in gear oil.

Like was said, most likely oil leaking past the rear output seal. You can "double up" the seals using thinner seals to minimize this. Make sure some sealer is used on the splines of the output shaft and companion flange, make sure the companion flange seal surface is not pitted or grooved. If so a repair sleeve or new flange is indicated. Sometimes the bore where the seal is pressed in is scarred also. I've found a small amount of sealer around the outside of the seal shell helps take up any gaps to eliminate this problem.
