I recently got my replacement tank for the 72 and of course its bare metal. I know it'll rust if I do nothing but I wonder if I have to paint it with anything specific or just will enamel do?

Epoxy rattle-can paint will hold up against gaoline better than most other spray paints IMHO, followed closely by Rust-Oleum's "professional grade" paint.

I've found that the primer you use under the paint has a great impact on how well the finish coat will hold up to gasoline as well; It's worth a trip to the body shop supply store to get a good zinc-oxide primer. The regular rattle-can primers just seem to lift as soon as you get a splash of gasoline on it.

(I redid the tank in my flatty 3 times before I finally got it right..)

Is it bare metal, or galvanized (zinc coated)?

hmm, its got a coating of some kind, you can feel it, its not like slick bare metal, it has like a sticky something on it so I think thats prob a bare metal with something sprayed on it to keep it clean while it ships.

i installed my tank over 12 years ago. i didn't paint it. still looks very good, minus a few dents. very minimal surface rust.

i'd be more inclined to spray it with clean oil once per year, rather than paint it, although i haven't sprayed it, either. i just hose off the underside of the jeep anytime i get mud/junk up there. seems to work ok.

I've got a new tank too. It's galvanized, except where the apes at GasTanks Are Us slid it around until there is no galvanizing on the bottom. Does galvanizing affect adhesion? Does it take a special primer? I may have it Rhino lined instead of paint.
