Did the model 20 rear axle on a cj5/7 have 11" brakes and will they bolt onto a rear 44?

Yes, 76 thru maybe mid 78, till they came out with disc up front, then changed to 10" if I recall.
The bolt pattern between 20 and 44 is different on the backing plate.

Jim is correct. The guts can interchange but the backing plate bolt pattern and offset will not work on a 44. Been there done that. We used to modify 44 flat backing plates for the park brake cable when installing a stock style 44 in place of a frequently bent 20. Or a custom 44 in place of a 20.

Disk brakes were first offered and optional in the CJ 1n 1977, so there were '77s and some '78s that had disks and 11" x 2" Bendix rear brakes.
The change to 10" x 1.75" rears might be coincident with the change of the fronts from 6-bolt to 2-bolt caliper bracket.

Thanks gents. I’ll turn my attention elsewhere for backing plates.

In addition to the 11" CJ backing plates which are getting difficult to find, the 11" backing plates from early 70s Ford Bronco will fit, 11" plates from Jeep Wagoneer and Jeepster will fit with minor modification (drill two holes), 11" backing plates from early 70s postal Jeeps will fit, and 11" brake backing plates for IH Scout II will fit.

I have a set of Scout 11" plates but they are very recessed, not flat like the cj stuff.

Not sure what you have. I have used Scout II plates that were same offset as the Jeep plates. Think the ones I had were from a 72-73, left over from a donor I used when I built a Scout II. Maybe later models had different axles.
