Need help…. This could be a long post, but I’m going to try and keep it short

    - dauntless V6 running well on points

    - truck died several times this week before complete no start situation

    - swapped in Petronix - no start

    - got motor to TDC (seen on balancer) rotor placement seems to be 180 deg off (but it ran on the points) can’t turn rotor around due to clocking position

    - don’t know where to start now.. I don’t want to pull distributor since the truck ran as it sat, but could there be an issue with distributor clocking even at this point?

Tdc compression stroke? Easy to be 180 out.

Do you have 12 volt coming in? Do you bypass the resistor with Petronix? How about resistance checking the coil?

I’m going to turn the engine again before I pull the distributor and check when the timing mark comes around again.

Resistor is paired with the coil, so for what I have it should work. If and when I upgrade the coil I’ll get an internally resisted one.

I can’t imagine I need to pull the distributor.. Engine was running great up until what I assume was a bad condenser..

just a cautionary tale, not what it sounds like your problem:

When I bought mine the PO had lost spark and decided to replace plug wires. I’m going to assume that the prior PO had stabbed the dist wrong and then found a wire clock that allowed him to adjust the timing. Not being careful the PO had run the plugs by the cap numbers.

Pull #1 plug you should feel air pressure when it comes up, valves will be closed. Thats compression stroke.

Pull number one spark plug and put your thumb over the hole turn engine over. on the compression stroke the pressure will push your thumb off align TDC with harmonic balancer assuming ur harmonic balancer is good

    Well that was quick…

Turned the engine over 180 deg
Popped the cap on and “re wired” the cap

    fired right up….
Engine timing has always been something that I rush into doing and then always end up retracing my steps to get it right.

took it out real quick to check everything.. WOW…
I’ve driven plenty of points, petronix, HEI ignitions and it’s just amazing to me the initial difference.
