early cj5 - frame vin location? year of cj

    Hi,
I recently acquired an early cj5 that was abandoned on a ranch about 20 years ago. I need to get it registered and I'm told that, in addition to the vin tag on the firewall, I need to find the frame-vin for the vin certifier at the DMV. I'm in California.

    1) Where can I find the frame-vin?
    2) where can I find the engine serial number?
    3) how can I figure out the year of the vehicle?

has CAL license plate, last registered in 92 -- not in the DMV system.

has VIN#, stamped on screwed on plate on the LF firewall (dmv doesn't like it because it's hard to read, screwed on and someone wrote the numbers in felt marker on top of it in the past).

    f head engine.
wipers on top of frame (one is vacuum, other is manual)
    81 in wheel base
    single brake cylinder under floor.

front and rear PTO's. Front pto to winch.
    has a real tailgate.

    thanks, Mike

    1) Located on top flange of right frame rail directly behind the battery tray.
    2) Foreward center of engine on flat surface directly behind the water pump.
    3) Via the sequential serial plate number

About 1 in 5 actually have a number stamped in the frame. Which is the reason that about 1 in 5 that you buy actually comes with the title that it started with. For some reason people seem to get the titles mixed up quite frequently. DMV inspectors don't quite like the idea that by removing four screws you can put any tag on the Jeep.

There's diagrams in the VIN PDF Zoomer et al. wrote that show locations. See the first post of this topic for the link.

The two tags on the passenger side behind the battery are missing on my 1971.

Though after reading all 63 pages of this thread I would guess my Jeep was built May of 1971 S/N 375237

    Thanks now you tell me.
Actual I really wanted to see how many people posted with CJ5's made after mine.
I think I only saw two. Maybe also one more someone said they had seen, although it did not belong to them.

Looking up info for a friends ECJ5. told it was a '64 or '65. The tag on the fire wall is

    8322 12763

    83= Universal CJ5
    22= Tuxedo Park Mark IV

    Then I get lost.

It says 10,11 or 13 #'s in the Vin, yet this one only has 9???

    VIN Number Question?

I need the help of you guys who know their old CJ-5 Jeeps, specifically a '58 Willys. I'm the new owner of the Jeep and the old owner evidently isn't very good with putting things in safe places because he has lost the Title as well as the Original VIN tag located on the firewall. It has a 225 buick v6 which obviously wasn't the original engine and also it doesn't have the original dash so there is no sticker there. From this wonderful website I learned there was also a serial number located on top of the frame on the passenger side. So I have found that 5 digit number which is 81,XXX which tells me that it is a '58, but it doesn't help me because it's not the entire VIN. I have done research but I need someone to help me out on narrowing the first 5 (or however many digits in front of the serial #).

Here is the link to the page I am looking at and trying to narrow the first 5 digits down to http://www.earlycj5.com/zoomer/Vehicle_Indentification.pdf

I am thinking the numbers should be something like this:

Chassis code either 83 or 57

Body style either 54 or 05

and the 5th digit or any after I have no clue.

I have no where near the expertise to be sure like many of you guys do on this board, so please help me out guys.

p.s. if there is any other information you guys might need or pictures to help I will gladly post them.

    Re: VIN Number Question?

So in this case should the Entire Vin # be 5754881XXX ? I just tried to look that number up on a vin search site and it came up blank. That doesn't mean you are incorrect though as I believe some states titled the numbers in different ways...But I just want to make sure there isn't another set of numbers I am missing. Thanks

Do you think it is possible that they have lost the paperwork for the VIN # and that's why it does not show up?

    Re: VIN Number Question?

It should be 57548 81 followed by three more digits not Xs, unless you can't read the frame stamp in which case it'll be harder to narrow down the actual year of production for us and harder for you to determine just what the VIN really is.

I'd suggest reading the PDF, it covers this information quite thoroughly, the common prefixes, etc.
