Unless the manifold gaskets are leaking, leaving the manifold alone is probably the best choice.
The later heads are shaped differently on the sealing surface with the valve cover and the covers wont interchange.

I always tapped a chisel between the gear and bearing to push the bearing on down the shaft.
They make replacement parts to fix your front spring hangers....
