Oil pan back off, rear main cap off. The good news is, there is a seal. The rubber side seals didn't have the stakes in them, and had a very little bit of RTV where the cap seats in the block. The seal looks good. It looks like it was leaking on one side between the cap and the block. I'll get a seal kit so I can replace the side seals, and stake them like they're supposed to be, and use anaerobic sealer, like it's supposed to have. I'm surprised this was put together poorly, considering what the rest of the motor looks like. It sure sounds good. Or, at least it did when it was running.

If the rest of the motor looks good I wouldn't sweat it too much even though very frustrating. Many people aren't aware of the quirks and details of Buick v motors. It does kinda make you wonder though don't it?

Well, the good news is I was going to change the oil after cam break in anyhow. :)
So I'll be out a pan gasket, rear main seal set, and an hour or two..

I just hope there isn't a leaking gallery plug up there...

That sucks. You buy a short block and expect it to be right but if that's all at least you know how to fix it. I'm going through something similar with power steering pumps on my cherocar. 2 of them with low pressure and have manual steering until things warm up. Maddening ain't it.

    Dang I phone.....

Well, a long block, but yeah. Sure sound different than the old one. I wouldn't think the cam I put in would do it. Probably just pistons that fit..:)

Unfortunately no one in town has a pan gasket or a main seal. Might be able to get them tomorrow afternoon, but it'll likely be Thursday.

As usual, I'm a few days behind but, which flywheel did you use? I'd have used one that was drilled since that would seem to be evidence of at least some attempt to balance. Hope you get 'er sealed up. Can't count on anyone but yerself these days, and the folks here of course. Beeg Dummy had to google "anaerobic sealant." Luck.

It's not leaking as bad as it was. I'm going to try to get ~400-500 miles on it with the (second batch) break in oil in it. Then I'll do whatever it takes to fix it. I now have an oil spot on my garage floor..:(

    :sigh: Really, really BIG :sigh:
I can't drive this thing like this. I wiped the oil off of the bell housing and oil pan, and 10 miles later it's dripping. I'm going to pull the trans/ flywheel so I can see where it's leaking before I pull the rear main again. I only replaced the bottom half of the seal, because I was pretty sure it was leaking between the bearing cap and the block. I'm pretty sure it isn't now.

The rebuilder told me they would cover any parts, plus $15 an hour flat rate. Better than a poke in the eye I guess.

The plug at the back of the block where the cam is has been known to create substantial leaks too.
