how much larger? I remember thinking the same when I installed the pilot bushing on mine, but it eventually ended up working out. As I was driving the pilot bushing in, some of the material on the outside scraped off thus creating a perfectly snug fit...does your pilot bushing have tiny grooves from the machining?...I think the grooves are part of the design and were meant to get scraped off during the installation...

No the outside is nice and smooth. It is just a smidge too big, like it wants to set itself in there but just barly barly dont so im thinking once i start driving her in there, it will work just fine. The old one, however, is going to be a bugger to get out.

Posi, i noticed that there is a rubber peice inside the pilot hole. If i stick my finger inside the pilot bushing (original) i can feel it...has a sort of nipple on the end of it also. I will try the grease trick tomorrow and hopfully it comes out. the old was is bushed all to peices so cross your fingers.

I just had an EPIPHANY! Now, I am using REAR toyota leaf springs front and back of my jeep. Now, what if I was to swap the front springs out of the jeep and put in stock toyota front springs instead? I know the front springs are going to have a higher spring rate then the rears but can find no numbers online about it. Anyone know??? Or if I can find the exact same leaf spring but about 2-3 inches shorter, that would pull my shackle in a bit in the front and raise her back up to where i want it.

Havn't got much done to him lately, but was able to get the tranny sold and start getting everything ready to stab in the new unit. I was surprised at how close they were in size, I thought it was going to be ALOT bigger. Here are a few pictures to hold yall over.
T15/D20 is the dirty one and the NP435/D300 is the black one.

Was able to get her out of the backyard and into some sunlight for a littlbe bit. Once on flat ground, she sits perfect.

Here he is lined up with my buddies 86' Cj7. His 7 is sprung over with 2.5" springs and 1" shackles on 33's as well.

We also started having a little bit of fun since we got tired of chores. Most action the poor jeeps have seen all year.

Well, due to the rain, holidays and the start or a new job I have not had almost any time to work on the jeep. However!!!!, I have received a few misc. items for the build like a new clutch and clutch fork (forgot to take off mine when I sold my trans) and my new seats! I like the low backs I have in it now, but they both need redone and placed around here want almost the same amount as a new set would cost. Soooo, I ebayed late one night and found these for 125.00 shipped to my front step. Will use one of my originals to place in the back for my new seating.

And yes, I know I have been saying this for a few months now, but IF the rain stops this weekend and I dont get called in I will be stabbing in the new trans and t-case. Wheeled my buddies cj7 the other day and got the itch really bad this time so hopfully the fire keeps on burnin.

Stick the pilot bushing in the deep freeze for a few hours. Metal contracts when cold and expands when hot. Should make all the difference.

Let it warm back up before you try to stick the tranny in. And check to make sure it fits on the end of the tranny input shaft before you install it in the end of the crank.

I tried sticking it on the tranny shaft a while back and it fits like a dream. Just wish this dang weather would clear up so I can start stabbing her in.

Well got the old pilot bushing out and the new one in yesterday after work. Had to use a flat head screwdriver and a hammer and chip her out of there. New one was a bugger to get in even after sitting in the freezer for 3 days. But, at last she was in and I was able to get my clutch and preasure plate bolted in place right before it got too dark. Had to customize my aligning tool since I was sent the wrong one. Had to sand the splines down and enlarge the top of the tool so it fit snug and centered in the pilot bushing. Have been slacking on photos, i know, so I will post a few tomorrow. Soon as I get a couple buddies for muscle, I will be able to slide the new tranny in place. Cross your fingers, I want this part to go smooth but the build really hasn't had too many of those smooth moments thus far.

Well it has been a long time since I have wrenched on the jeep but was able to get a couple of good days in. Got the clutch and preasure plate bolted up and after alot of struggling, i managed to get the np435 and 300 stabbed in. Great thing is the stock crossmember had just the right holes for the tranny mount but I have to cut new spacer blocks and drill a couple new holes in the frame to mount her up. Fits purdy good just having clutch issues. I ended up bending my clutch fork so I straightened her back out but went too far. So now it will not release my clutch due to the back of the fork hitting the bell housing...will work that out somtime this week. I will try snapping some photos tomorrow if possible and post them up for you guys. See if I cant keep this dang built in the 1st or 2nd page again!

I had trouble putting a pilot bushing in an 87 Cherokee. Had to cut a section out of it to get back out. I replaced with a roller bearing one. Slid right in. Haven't used the standard bushing since when replacing a clutch.

Mine went in purdy smooth actually. Getting the old one out was a bear but with a little light taping, the new one went right in. Well here are a few pictures of the tranny mounted. Hard to get under and take more pictures with a cherry picker under the jeep.

Going to have a longer drive line then I originally thought.

Stay tuned, more to come as I can.

YOU BET!!!!! I dont care if I have to sell a kidney, i will be there. What I got left is:
    * Finish bolting up the trans cross member and adjust clutch (may replace clutch barrel).
*adapt the toyota break lines to the jeep hard lines.
*Get 2 more shocks and find a way to mount them.
*Intall light switch, motor mounts and seats.
*buy and cut/lengthen two toyota front drive lines.
*buy my steering and bolt er up, shorten drag link.
*put on steering wheel and mount bumpers and winch and tank skid once they are finish beign made.
Mainly a lot of little stuff to finish up. Shocks are going to be a pain. I have 2 bilstein 5100's that came off my GMC front with a 6" lift. They will be good for the front I think. Not much up travel in the front but ALOT of drop. lifting it with a cherry picker, i get almost a full 12" before the tires come off the ground. Also thinking about selling the 33" LTB's and putting on a set of 35" BFG KM2's that I just put on my sierra...who knows lol. But yes, I have august stuck in my head and I will be there!

Well I got a question. In the photos above, you can see the tranny sitting at a decent angle. That puts the area where the cross member bolts to the frame at a wedge instead of square. What should be done bout that???

I used a polyurethane tranny mount from Novak Conversions. Takes the angle up just fine. I just went back and looked at your pics. The mount you have looks just like the one I'm using.
