    Hi All,

I really want/need to purchase a trailer. I finally have the 5 reliable to where I can take it deep in the field and I know she'll bring me out. The unfortunate thing is for hunting/camping, the cargo space is very limited. This brings me to a trailer option....not looking for the tent/chuck box/refrig/options...just a bucket w/ some tie-downs....don't even really need a tailgate.

    1) How is the driving with a 4x6 trailer and such a small wheelbase? Highway? Offroad?

    2) Is the "pindle" (sp?) hitch the best option/necessary?

    3) Comparing some older military trailers to rebuild vs. new ones. Are the m101's or m416's worth rebuilding? I'm dealing with a budget of about 2-2.5K.
If the body is fairly decent, how much could I expect to spend rebuilding a trailer? (bed-liner, paint, wheels, tires, electrical, etc)

Max load for me would be an Elk and some equip...maybe 1500lbs.

    4) There are some offroad trailer options that I could have built, but are those as good?

    5) Finally, in regards to the CJ. I have a stock 1976 rear sort of bumper...looks like something from an erector set. Is there an options that bolts on to that or do I have to drill into the frame to install a hitch?

Thank you in advance for all your help!:):flag:

Do you have a picture of the bumper you have? One of the 76 drawbars was designed to hold a pintle hitch. If I could see it I could tell you more.

You should really get rid of that and sell it to me. I need that same bumper for my 78. Here is a picture of the complete setup for it from the parts book.

I don't like pintle hooks...too noisey for me all the time, on and off road.
I'd put a tab and a trailer ball on there...but wait
maybe find a trailer first and then do what is needed to match the trailer.

I bolted a receiver box to the angle iron and ran a couple braces forward like the factory hitch/ draw bar had.

the tube for a slide in would work well too as Patric has.
I cut out and welded mine into the crossmember for ground clearance.

I found this old Ben Hur here in town, and repainted it, lifted it 2 1/2", replaced the bearings, and put a new coupler on it. I have about $500-$600 into it, including purchase price and permanent registration.

If I drag the receiver I've got other issues..:) I'll drag the shackles (which I have) and the spare tire first.

    I wasn't nitpicking....
the ball mount drags on mine in certain situations, but the tube never will.

I know. The ball mount could certainly drag. The one in the pic is lower than the one I use with my trailer, but I had to make an extension for it.

    O.K....

So I've been looking and looking and cannot find the 4 hole bracket that holds the pintle hitch to the L "erector set" type bumper that I have.

Does anyone know where I can find one?

    Thanks!!

Ha! Doesn't matter. Finally found an outfit in Yuma AZ that sells the OEM pintle setup for this type of bumper. Unfortunately, with 31" tires it will not fit, and had to weld a 2" receiver to the bottom of this setup anyways. Funny.

Anyone need a pintle? Let me know.
