Yet another DJ question... (Diff. gearing)

    I've already got several posts going here, but I have yet another question! :?

    From different sources, I've read mention of DJ3A's having come from the factory with both 4.10 gears and 4.56 differential gears. Did they come with both and, if not, which one?

    My 1965 FSM lists 4.10 gears only with no optional ratio. It also shows the rear axle being a 23-2 or 27.

    Okay, thanks. Ha - clear as mud! :p So I guess I just need to take the diff. cover off and count teeth, or at least look for a tag on the differential?

    The ring gear should also have the tooth count stamped in its edge. That's an alternative to counting the teeth.

    Thanks. Can you even see the pinion well enough to count the teeth on it without disassembling the differential?

    How do I tell what ratio my axles have?

    Jack up rear end, mark drive shaft with chalk, rotate tires 2 full turns while countings number of times the chalk rotates. Unless you have a locker of some sort.

    Look for a tag on the differential that has numbers like 43-11, 43/11=3.90 Gears (Example!!!!)

    Take the differential cover off and look at the ring gear, it will have the same numbers as the tag stamped on it.

    I've read that Dana 60 axles have the model number (60) cast into the case - is that the case with all Dana axles? There seem to be conflicting reports on what axle was used in these rigs.

    Most have the number cast in the bottom right support web of the pumpkin (carrier). Many 27's have the # cast in the top of the pumpkin instead. Not sure on 27 rear's but on most fronts the 27 has the vent in the pumpkin and 25's have them in the cover. This may or may not apply to the rear.

    Also,
    If it's a 23-2, it will have full-float axles. It will be noticeably different from any of the other jeep axles.

    I got a chance to look the DJ over closer and begin work on it this weekend (cleaned out the floorboards and took the tranny out), and it's a model 27 axle. The ratio tag on the cover is somewhat rusted, but I'm pretty sure it says 41-10/4.10 on it. :)
