Original Alternator in 66?

I have a Motorola alternator in my 66 CJ5A Tux with what looks like original mounts. I am the second owner and the jeep has 7000 miles and the F-head. Were alternators stock or an option in 66 jeeps? It's a 35 amp, Model No. A12NW526, S/N 5 1327. I was under the impression that only generators came on jeeps in 66. This is the photo of my alternator,

My 66 isn't a tux but it does have 35 amp motorola alternator that looks to be original FWIW.

 

A Fire Dept originally bought the Tux and outfitted it as a grass rig with a 150 gallon water tank in place of the rear seat. That's why the low miles. I wonder if they requested an alternator or maybe as a dealer option. I will do some digging, maybe someone who was on the dept at the time. Thanks for the replies, this website has the most knowledgeable people as members.

 

Not doubting you, but I would check that. I would be surprised if any cars came with generators by 1970-71 (except for the VWs). The enabling technology for the alternator is the semiconductor diode, which were cheap by 1970... an alternator is much more efficient and likely was cheaper to manufacture than a generator (with its segmented armature).

Unclebill..... don't call your ride "the slug"! I have a 134 F-head and had done 63mph... The wind was with me and the air was moist, otherwise 55 is good... unless the wind is against me, than 45 is more like it.... But otherwise.....uh.. what was i talking about?.......lol! I love the 134. But i too am getting older and no longer wheel hard and i like.. no, LOVE this cool old Tux of mine. It's 4 years younger than me.....All Yall, (is that a word?) Jeepers ROCK!

Outstanding! The same Birth month. Wish i could say the same. The only info i can decode so far, can't be sure yet, need the sequential number off the frame, looks like the birthday for the Tux is maybe around April of 65.

 

Just to make things a little less clear :?

I looked up a '70 CJ-5 with a F134 on RockAuto, and they only show the 37A Motorola alternator for the CJ-5 that year, V6 or F4. However, for a '66 F4, they only show generator parts.

We go to Napa Online, and they show alternators and generators for 1966, with no distinction by engine type.

These online retailers have a lot of mistakes in their listings for old cars, IME. But I suspect you could get either an alternator or a generator in 1966, and that the generator was gone entirely by 1970. But that's just a guess based on these sources.

 

Wow, clear as mud! Odds are (by the info you kind Jeepers provided), alternators were available. That's my take anyway... I have only owned 79s, both 5 and 7s, up to this point. Having an early jeep is a little more (hell, a lot more..) research dependant. At this point, i have more questions than answers and I THANK GOD for this website and it's members. As a slightly disabled vet, who at the current moment is still in, until the army medically retires me, I wish to thank you all for your service and devotion to this hobby, obsessive compulsion, disease, whatever you want to call it.
