 well the pertronix is in, and though there is about a 60-70% difference, the sputter is still there and there is still a lack of power when under load....man I am getting frustrated again

Plugs have the screw off ends on 'em? I chased a misfire a long time ago due to that, end was loose on the threaded part and cause intermittent misfire. When it starts to "sputter" on the road, pull the choke or "enrichening circuit" on your Solex. If it's fuel delivery, that'll tell you.

(pounding head against wall) well plugs looked just fine (#2 cyl was a little sooty but very dry), issue does not seem to change at all while playing with choke... I am at a total loss, just thinking out loud here but what if something was blocking the exhaust, not really sure anymore. Time to walk away before someone gets hurt I guess. Oh and it is there all the time now, never goes away at all, just seems to get worse I think

Hang in there... my problems on the :v6: have got me at a loss as well. You might check to see if you are getting a vaporlock with the tank/line.

Also - might check the float level.

When i first bought mine - the wire from the starter to the ignition was loose - you might check that, if its loose, you might be shorting out when she warms up and its causing you to not fire.... just tryin to help :D

That's what I was thinking, but what really has me baffled is that last fall when I put her away she was acting this way, but when I ran her for the first couple times this spring she ran great right out of the box. Then after a couple trips it all started again???

I have experienced the same issues with my dauntless. I would be going down the road at 40 to 50 mph and all of a sudden i would get nothing. what i found to be the problem was fuel delivery. i have a pressure regulator mounted in line to turn down when im bouncing in the rocks to prevent overloading the carb. while it was happening i shut down the motor and pulled the top off the carb to see fuel level and i was suprised to see little or no fuel. I turned up the regulator to allow more flow and it went away. I really believe you have something resrticting flow to your carb. Do you run the 2bbl rochester? hope this helps.

Ran into a similar problem with mine a few years ago. It was crud from the gas tank clogging the fuel lines. I cleaned out the gas tank and install an inline fuel filter and problem went away.

Yeah, I am going to clean the whole fuel system out from carb to tank this weekend, it has a new inline fuel filter and flow is great from there, after that it goes to an electric fuel pump then to the carb

There is one thing else I would try. Busting the carbon built up in the engine usually helps as well. Some use different methods for doing that.

I always went to an area where there isn't many people to start like out in the country, then remove the air cleaner to expose the carb. I then gently pour tranny fluid into the carb which causes the motor to run like crap, so you must have your other hand on the carb linkage keeping the RPM's up to compensate for the tranny fluid. I don't pour the whole quart in, usually just about 1/4 of it, after that you just hit the back country roads and get it going 55 MPH then I dump the clutch like I am passing someone and watch the white exhaust smoke(from the tranny fluid) turn to black when you put the hammer down.

That black smoke is the carbon that was on the valve seats and all the other built up crap inside the chamber. The tranny fluid burns very very hot in the cylinder which is why I don't use that much at a time.

This will not harm the engine, at least none of my engines have ever been harmed.

You may have a sticking valve and it only shows at lower RPM's when you hit 45+MPH.

I'd be concentrating my efforts there. Replacement stock pump w/no vacuum port was like $25 when I did mine. I bet you got a pump issue......................

thinking burnt/ misadjusted valve..... when is the last time they were adjusted?? things ted to wear and clearances tend to get tighter, and last but not least things tend to expand the hotter they get, if they are out of adjustment, the valves (may only be one) may not be compleatly closing.....

I may have missed it but, I would try a 12ga Jump wire ,From the batt. to dis. this should eliminate any doubt on elec intermitancy. good luck

PS, Disconnect your normal ignition wire to eleminate any intermitant grounding posibilities

A burnt valve won't come and go, it will have a loss of power all the time.

Did you say you were using a Solex with an electric fuel pump Erik? I seem to remember that the Solexes don't like more than about 2-3 PSI fuel pressure, and I know other people have had issues when running this setup without a regulator in front of the carb.

My money is still on crud in the tank. I would take the tank out, pull the sending unit and flush it really good with hot, soapy water. After you rinse it out good let it sit for a few days to dry and reinstall. A can of dry gas (alcohol) in the bottom of the tank before refilling it will handle any residual moisture. Blow the lines out from both ends if possible.

BTW Erik, check out my cool tool post in OT. ;)
