When I put the 55 away for the winter she was had developed a sudden sputter and loss of power, I checked plugs, wires, points, etc and all were in new condition. Well when I brought it out last week the sputtering was gone {shrug} well yesterday driving down the road in 3rd at 40mph it suddenly came back. Again all the normal things have been checked and look fine. Any ideas?? the gas is new, carb is new, cap and rotor are new, points and condensor are new as with the plugs and wires.

Put in a can of dry gas (HEET). Check/replace fuel filter. If the tank wasn't full before you put it away, you probably have some H2o condensation in there. Is your local gas E-85 or 10% ethanol? Stuff is junk.

Its 10% ethenol and I run a real good stablizer/additive in every tank, the gas should be fine.... Could be fuel filter I will look at that

One thought: check all vacuum lines and the head/intake manifold gasket(s) for leaks.

You still 6V or converted to 12? Check the coil when it happens again, see if its hot or loose wires on top.

At first, i thought it was the accelerator pump, but the carb is new....

Could it be a plugged carb jet?

Well, it just started again after about 10 miles of running perfect, the coil (12v) does not appear to be hot to the touch and the wires seem fine. No vac leaks that I can find

I would look at the carb and then go backwards.

I presume the coil you are using has the internal resistor. That is unless you installed the ballast resistor when you upgraded to 12V.

Yup internal resistor 12v as far as the carb goes it is a brand new solex that looks like new on the inside as well. I guess I could take it apart and clean the snot out of it, but if it was carb wouldn't it act up all the time? This is very intermittant

Can't believe it's the carb. It was a new one never used. Thinking out loud here but
what about your distributor. Any play in it. As in the axial direction. (in/out)

When it starts to sputter, does it: stay the same -all speeds and idle, or: goes away after you let off and reappears under load only?? Does it only when warm, or once it sputters it and you let it sit it's gone till your next trip?

hate to say it, but it sounds like water in the fuel, just a little sloshing around the bottom of the tank imeteriadtly getting sucked up the pickup tube

It appears to only do this once she has gone a couple miles. It is a constant spudder while under power that also resuts in a loss of power ie: foot to floor equals about 40-45mph tops with no decent acceleration. When you let of the throttle it seems to go away completly and if you can find a "sweet" spot cruising around 25-30 it seems to go away also.

I realize the gas could have water in it, but it is fresh fuel(ie 2or3 days ago) and it is still doing it with no change. Even though the condensor and points are new, could they cause this? Thanks guys, this one really has me frustrated.

Well there is no polay up/down or left/right in the dizzy itself, but the cap is a little loose

Busted spring or sticking weight on the advance arms inside the dist? Might explain having to find a "sweet spot"

Well forget everything I said about sweet spots, only underload, etc. Whatever this is its getting worse, it runs like crap in every gear from idle to 45. Dumped some drygas in just to do it, also checked this guts of the dizzy and all looks good

Could also be a piece of loose crap in the tank that periodically gets caught in the outlet.
