whats the diff?

    a freind of mine has a set of front and rear ends for a newer jeep he's been trying to sell me for a couple of years. Question is will the centered rear diff fit with my offset transfer case? I have heard it won't work and thats why I havent bought them yet.

    No. Too much compound angle on the drive shaft.

    A dana 20 will bolt right on though, correct?

    What side does the front axle offset to? If it is a newer( IE 87 and newer) then it won't work the front axle is offset to the wrong side.

    He was asking about swapping in both front and rear. Newer Jeep could mean YJ,TJ,JK since no year was specified. So the front axles for them would not work.

    Or do you mean the wording? I figured since offset had been used already mention drivers side drop or passenger side drop might get confusing.

    There is no such thing as a compound angle on a drive shaft. I know what you are trying to say, but an angle is just an angle, and it doesn't matter if it is straight up and down or sideways or halfway inbetween. A driveshaft doesn't care about gravity.

    The angles should just be opposite and equal, and the joints just need to be able to handle the suspension movement. Simple as that on single cardon driveshafts.

    Then just go ahead and bolt up a 18 transfer case and a centered rear end and tell us all how it works. Remember that we love pics!

    The compound angle comes when there is no single plane that goes through the center line of the transfer case yoke, the enter line of the driveshaft, and the center line of the pinion. The only way this can happen is if the pinion and TC lines are not parallel to the ground (but in the same plane) and then you offset the TC or axle.

    So yeah, there is a compound angle if the driveshaft is offset, unless the pinion and TC axes are level. This is analogous to having the yokes out of phase by some amount. Not a huge amount, but for a short driveshaft it could be significant.

    ok so all i'll need is a d 20 transfer case and it will al fit? they are out of a 70s model 74 75 somewhere in there.

    Yes with the input gear to match the transfer case. Be aware that a 20 has a 2.03-1 low range vs. the 2.46 which is common on 18 transfer cases.

    The Scout 2 20 linkage has many fewer moving parts and is a common upgrade to get rid of all the Jeep linkage.

    Thanks for the info, dont know if I want to go that route this year, I havent had any problems withthe original setup yet.

    the origonal set up in early cj5s is a great setup, the ring gear in a d27 is the same size as a d30, the D44 in the rear has no real issues, and we still have a lot of support for these axles, I would run them as lonf as I had the chance to, I still run them in my 67 and 70. I see no reason to change.
    I mean if we have no problems with what we have why invest the money to change? It really gets expensive when you start adding in all the little things that have to be changed with the axles.

    I here ya I have had mine in some pretty knarley places so far and it hasn't let me down yet. in fact with the lockers I can idle through what most people have to power through, my brohter cant believe it and wont ride with any one else he loves my jeep, calls it the hippo " bigger than a rhino and loves the mud" Thats just it first you have to buy the diffs then the transfer case, then ... it just keeps going. Ive already put lockers in both front and rear and rebiult completly I think I,m going to stick with my original plan of just changing gears.
