Great information as always. The almost 40 year old paint is buffing out very well. Who would have thought it would actually shine.

What is the best way to deal with the surface rust in the tool box and still keep it "original"?

Well I just got my copy of the W-1195 R1 parts catalog today.
I have already screened it for further Renegade information.

    Here's what I have discovered.....
The information found in the W -1195 R1 predates the CJ-5 Renegade II.
In other words, no entries were made specific to the Renegade II
Therefore all entries noted as:"(Renegade)" were originally a reference to the Renegade I.

The following is all correct as was previously posted........

    Group....Part #.............PARTS SPECIFIC TO RENEGADE I ONLY

    25-01....930407...........Rim and disc, assy ( 15 x 5.5 ) ( Also used on Renegade )
    25-01....994733...........Rim and disc, assy ( 15 x 8.00 ) ( Renegade )
    25-01....948722...........Kit, wheel cover ( Renegade )
31-13....SE-2073-200...Kit, Spare tire carrier, swingout ( For Renegade I only )
35-23A..977895...........Kit, reflector, rear quarter panel ( Renegade )
    35-101..984277...........Kit, Speed stripes ( black ) ( Renegade )
    35-101..984276...........Kit, Speed stripes ( white ) ( Renegade )

....................................PARTS SPECIFIC TO RENEGADE II ONLY

    25-01....999156...........Wheel, mag dish ( 7x15 ) ( Renegade II )
25-01....999157...........Nut and washer assy, acorn ( Renegade II )
    31-08....985594...........Panel, body rear ( Renegade II )
31-13....985625...........Bracket, support spare wheel assy ( Renegade II )
    35-101..985615...........Kit, speed stripes ( black ) ( Renegade II )
    35-101..985614...........Kit, speed stripes ( white ) ( Renegade II )
35-102..985560...........Kit, padding, roll bar ( Renegade II )

....................................PARTS SPECIFIC TO BOTH RENEGADE I and II

    10-14....992859...........Pan, oil ( incl shield ) ( Renegade )

15-07....994396...........Harness, underbody wiring assy.( Renegade )
    16-01....948666...........Ammeter assy.( Renegade )
16-01....F-144035........Bushing, reducing oil pressure signal switch ( to block ) ( Renegade )

ok just read 9 pages of info and never did see the pictures of the wiring going through firewall, anyone find that yet? j/w also dumb question but no one seems to have brought it up, when were these dashes put into general use for cj5s? my 71(bd: 10/70) seems to have the characteristics of both the wiring and dash, however i have never thought the body was a ren, and i know the engine or body was swapped previously as my numbers dont match, much earlier f-head than the body, just wondering and hoping not to cause more confusion! included a pic of dash and mf sticker and vin is 8305015 277263(in pic its hard to see)

    83=cj5, 05=open body, 0=canadian built, 1=left hand drive, 5= F134 W/Emission
hope that helps you with your cj-5.

Canadian built CJ-5s have a "C" not a 0 in the ID number. Also, there were no Canadian Renegades. Production ended before them.

There is a SN thread in ecj5 tech forum.

hey guys i understand the sn and i really don't think i have a renegade, nor is canadian, however was just curious on the dash, as it looks factory as far as gauges and correct spot, however no renegades had the f-head only the 6, or that's how i read it at least... so just confused how a ren dash ended up in my tub with matching serial to vin plate under hood, could be transplant however if that's the case the sticker was moved extremely efficiently as i see no signs of this, so was just thinking out loud that this wasnt adding up to me, sorry for the confusion

ps i'll do some close investigating this weekend when i get back to the 5 to see if possibly signs of a moved sticker, or another sticker underneath etc

Not hard to put gauges in a dash.

the original gauge holes from the factory had a very small indexing groove for the gauge body to align with, to center the gauge body so to speak.
Anybody drilling holes in the dash for aftermarket gauges probably would not notch the opening.....
Simply removing one of your gauges and checking for this groove/notch might answer the question about the dash.
    just a thought

IIRC, the two gauges were optional equipment in 1971, but they were not the same gauges as the Renegade gauges. The dash could be factory for a non-Renegade.

hey guys thanks for the response, i'll check it out this weekend, as far as different gauges, my gauges look identical to the ones shown in the pictures in the renegade section on main page, but will check for some more clues on this mystery, thanks again for the help!

Your gauges look to me to be different than the Renegade gauges. The amp gauge should not have SW (Stewart Warner) on it and it should have a range from -40A to +40A and have a black bezel.

Ammeter should look like this: (this is WYOMIKE's img)

Oil pressure gauge should look like this:

I think that the model no. for the oil press gage was S.W. 379L. I can't see the number on the amp gage:(
Also jpflat2a is correct about the notch in the bottom of the panel hole. The factory installed ones had the notch and I would think that a dealer or owner installed one would not have that notch. But that does not make it a Renegade, just factory installed.

thanks for clearing it up guys, things just didnt add up in my head while reading all of this, as stated before never thought it was one, just got confused after reading and thought maybe there was another unknown chapter to my 5's history! thanks all for the input, as we know these 70-71's are the lost generation so i don't count anything out from being PO installed or factory, i'll still be checkin in the near future for the notches, as it seems to me a neat factory addition if so! thanks again!

This thread has been lying dormant for too long. Let's reawaken this one.
I have an original Renegade 1 with 22,000 miles. I am the fourth owner after my brother gave it to me. He purchased it from the second owner & I have documentation showing that it was originally purchased at a Jeep dealer in Seattle. He found it in a friends back yard under a tarp.
This unit was all original when he found it except for the white wagon style wheels. I have since replaced the wheels with Kelsey Hayes 15x8 steel wheels & installed a later model Delco electronic distributor from a Buick. I am currently adding a 12 circuit fuse block to fix some electrical issues. I will be keeping the original R1 plugs at the firewall.
The picture in my signature is from the day it came out from under the tarp.

Hi all sorry for the long post,
I have recently picked up what I thought was a 1970 Renegade I. I have browsed through all the pages in this thread and may have missed some info that i am looking for. I am not sure what i have. Having a known authentic 71' R2 when I was younger I kinda know some of the obvious clues in how to determine a Renegade I from a Renegade II. This one has me puzzled. It has what appears to have the original orange paint ( Paint code 999 and Trim 338 ) with the Renegade I decals, no black paint on the hood blister and has a tailgate, correct count on the leaf springs and all the skid plates, correct gauges in the dash and the correct wiring harness with 2 ballast resistors, dash pad and sun visors. All of the original paint 70 and 71 renegades that I have looked at over the years also has a black "R" paint stamp on the inside of the body support on the drivers side just up from the foot well behind where the V6 emblem bolts through the body. . Seems to be a common thing for the renegades that haven't seen on non renegades. So its a 70 Right??? Well this it where I am confused. Someone please correct me if I am wrong... From what I have always understood Jeep didn't start putting the fuel tank under the tub till 71'. This one has the tank under the tub and not under the seat. It is also titled as a 71. I have never seen a 71 Renegade I with a tailgate. The stripes show the age equally as bad as the paint but I can't see any evidence of the script being modified to look like a Renegade I.

Can someone shed some light on this???

The main way I would tell a '70 from a '71 is by the bell housing (there may be easier ways...) 1971 has a 1-piece bell housing that bolts directly to the transmission. Earlier years have a plate adapter between a Buick bell housing and the transmission.

The fuel tank move happened mid-year 1970.

That said, AFAIK there's no explicit identification of year in the Jeep CJ VINs prior to 1972. All you can do is infer the year-model from the value of the sequential serial number in the VIN.

I would weight the printing on the title less, and the other signs (Ren 1 characteristics) more. If it bothers you, you could try to get the title corrected... but I have no idea how sympathetic your Registry would be to your problem.

    Re: Amazing Discovery !

From what you've detailed the Jeep is specifically identified as a Renegade I on the hood itself.
The rear mounted gas tank seems to suggest it was built during the 1970/1971 transition timeline.
That implies it was built in August or very early September of 1970.
The serial plate number should indicate that as the build timeline.

Seven years later... Without a doubt, I have a well optioned 70 CJ5. Like, every option except the "smokers". It could not have been a renegade as it was built in May/June of 69.
