It's down near where my parents live, So it's not like I'm going out of my way if I just want to go look at it. I would get to see them as well. And that always makes Mom happy

The first year's blocks did not have liners - they instead relied on a new process that included silicon in the aluminum alloy. The intent was to etch the aluminum away and leave the silicon as the wear surface. Didn't work out very well in practice - they were notorious oil burners.

Well I made it down to look at the old jeep/vega here are a few pic's of it. It's in bad shape. but the motor doesn't look that bad from what I could see. Ole Gary must have been confused when he told me it was a 5, I'm thinking Commando It has the v6 but it's an automatic and looks like a centered dana 44. And way to long for a 5 It was really nasty raining out when I got there so I didn't craw under the thing.

With the automatic do you guys think it would still ba a canidate for a swap in my 5. What tranny would it be?

Pics didnt work. You have to use the IMG version on photobucket to get them to show in forums.

OK working now. Not sure if even for free that was worth it. WOW, just WOW

    If it's a Commando, and it's original, it's a TH400. Kinda long for a 5, and a higher 1st gear than a TH350.

I'd pick it up because parts are parts, if you got some place to hide it.

A V-6 upgrade, looks stock should be an easy bolt in.
Engine hasn't run for a while, dump some oil (atf whatever's handy) in the cylinders and let it sit for a couple of days.

Trans, some people like the TH400 swap, the other good thing is if you make the 400 fit, a 700r4 is the same length, another upgrade farther down the road? If you wheel your Jeep the Auto is nice.

Centered rear will also upgrade to a D300, Atlas or Stak if you have the big dollars.

Saw a power booster for swing pedals, looked fairly small, might fit nice.

Manual Saggy box up front? Might be good trading stock, some people like the manual steering.

If nothing else, for a few dollars in fuel, you could have some very good parts to trade.

    How about brakes? disk? 11"?

A good thing about it is, you can pull the parts, clean, fix, paint all the parts without your Jeep being down.

    Just my $.02,
