Headlight switch wiring

This is making me scratch my head.

I noticed about a month ago that when I turn on the headlights, the alt light comes on on my gage cluster. Thought I might have a short - can't find one, and the generator output remains constant in all switch positions.

Then I thought - gee, I noticed this problem when I changed out the burned out bulb in the alt light. After, closely examining the switch, I think the alt light is wired hot so it comes on just like the headlights.

I cannot find a diagram that will show me which wires go where on the switch. Anyone have a suggestion or link?

 

Depends on what type of alt sys you are running. Motorola system you should have a wire from alt AUX term going to ind lamp and second wire from lamp going to ign sw term that comes hot when in the on position.

 

Thanks Walt. Right now all that I have is a single purple wire running from the switch to the alt. light fixture. I do not see a place a for a second wire from the alternator.

 

The socket will have two purple wires going to it. (may have wrong socket in it's place) The bulb will have a smaller envelope than dash bulbs, and will be a #53 12v. Looking inside the glass bulb you will see a little glass beed holding the element. The glass beed should be a (pink or purple) color as it has to be a low resistant bulb or it won't glow when alt quits charging.
