Started work on my M416. This is what I started with:

I parked it in the garage and disassembled it:

After several hours with an angle grinder, I had the frame pretty well cleaned up. I then gave it two coats of POR-15 and a top coat of rattle can semi-flat black:

I gave the wheels a few coats of olive drab green:

After a few more hours with the angle grinder I had the bottom of the tub ready to go. I painted the underside of the tub with 2 coats of POR-15. I'm not going to top coat it since the POR-15 on the underside isn't going to see any sunlight:

    A few more update pictures:

I rewired the trailer. The old wiring was pretty loose and the wires were just twisted together and electrical taped. I soldered the wires and made everything nice and tight. I used zip ties to hold the wiring nice and snug to the frame. I also re-installed the lights and military data tag on the frame:

Next up was several house on the angle grinder again with the wire brush attachment. I knocked off all the loose paint and rust. I then gave the bottom of the bed, fenders, and anything else that was rusty a coat of POR-15

Next up was primer. It could have used a little more primer, but I ran out, so that will have to do. I also painted the hard to reach places with rattle can olive drab. I figured those would be the spots that would be hard to get with the air compressor powered spray gun.

I had to re-install the bed on the frame because I'm transporting the trailer to my parent's house this week where I'll paint it. I had some issues getting the trailer to fit on the frame and for the holes to line up, but I guess that's understandable since I dropped the bed once when I was moving it and and flipped it over twice to work on it. I'd imagine things shifted a little. With a little muscle, I was able to get it back on and bolted down with new grade 8 hardware. Pulleys are great!

Holy crap!! Slow down!! You are going to be done before me and I got mine first!! :)

Looks real good. You are going pretty much the exact same route I am except I hit the inside of the bed with 2 coats of Herculiner...man that stuff stinks while it's curing.....

Are you going with a 4 pin or round style connector to the Jeep? Just curious....

The wiring connector is the standard flat 4-pin (or 5 if you count the ground wire). It was just easier, since all my Jeeps already had that style of wiring connector.

I'm probably going to do the bed interior with either Herculiner or Durabak sometime in the near future.

FYI when you do - I used 3 quarts of Herculiner. I thought I could get away with 2, but I wasn't happy with only 1 coat on the sides.....

I going round for the same reason - my truck has it already...

    Update 3/13/08

I got it all painted up. Not the best paint job, but it looks better than what it did before I started.

    Few more updates:

Added some white star decals to complete the military look:

Added a spare tire carrier to the back. The carrier is either from an early CJ5 or from an M38A1. Either way it works well for my trailer application.

Mounted an ammo can up front to store gear, rope, tarp, tools, etc. It's got a rubber gasket and is waterproof.

Made some tarp supports out of PVC pipe. It should help to keep rain and debris out of the trailer while it's parked outside:

Added a cheap camo tarp for storage. I'm going to get a nice canvas tarp that fits a little better, but I had this camo tarp already, so it will do for now:

I also picked up a spare wheel:

I got the ammo can from :http://www.colemans.com/ They're about 2 hours from me. I took a trip to their surplus store a few months ago and got a few things, this ammo can being on of them. I think it was a 40mm can. It was the last one of this size that they had on the shelf. I think I paid $15 for it :)

    UPDATE 5/28/08

I got some new tires for the trailer. The Goodyear Wranglers just didn't look right and I was having trouble finding a used spare in the 30x9.5 size anyway, so I decided to go with three new military tires:

How does it pull with all that tongue weight off the hitch....?

Looking for a place to put my spare. I don't like ANY of the options.

I haven't towed it yet with the spare on the back, but it doesn't seem to sit on the landing leg any differently. I plan to put some tools and stuff in the ammo can so that will help even out the weight a bit. I might have a few more things up my sleeve for the front too...more on that to come.
