im just so frustrated right now

as most of you know i just installed a dui dist, i had it running ok with open headers, till someone said you cant time or adj without the exhaust on..(they are right of course) so my new magnaflows came in i nstall them and try and fire the jeep up... she ran and started, but was backfiring a touch through the mufflers... i figured im a couple teeth of again so i try and rotate the dist (btw which way do you adj if you think you are a couple teeth of?) so then i get it to a point where it wont fire, so i start all over again.. find tdc postiton rotor at number 1 on the cap... and go from there, she spits through the carb... so i fig 180 out, rotate it 180 and bang!! through the carb much worse.... now im back at tdc starting all over again, and i cant get it fired..... this thing is about to go off the cliff.... sorry for the rant but what am i doing wrong here? everything is hooked up, vac advance is pulgged at the hose coming off the carb... all wires have beeen triple checked, cant get a vac gauge on till i can get her running... mixture screws on the carb are 1 1/2 turns out from bottoming out

Find TDC (be sure you're on the compression stroke and not the exhaust), drop the distributor in with the rotor pointed to 11:00 or so and go from there.

You sound like you're doing it right but you didn't say if you were sure you were on the compression stroke or not.

I doubt though that if it ran fine without mufflers that you were off a tooth to begin with, you should've been able to just tweak the timing and carb to get everything set without yanking it all out and starting over. :(

i am 100% sure (finger test in plug hole) that i am on compression stroke... when you say rotor at 1100 do you mean as if looking at it from the front.... if thats the case i have been putting it at about 4:30 or 5:00... thats were the cap seemed to fit the best... i can try 1100.. at this point i will try sarcraficing a chicken and doing a jig on my head if thats what it takes

Sorry, I mean as you look at it from the driver's side. It should point to the passenger side of the radiator roughly.

im not touching this till someone gives me suggestions... i did what sparky said, and she fired right up, coughed once through the exhaust (not to bad), coughed once throguh the carb...very minor smoke, could have been to much gas down there and then died... my battery is starting to drain so im charging it right now before i try again... if i need to move a tooth or two, which way do i go?

Before you pull it out again!

    Plug wires are in order?

You've tried to rotate the distributor one way or the other and it won't smooth out? Rotating it will tell you which direction to go as it'll smooth out, if you cannot rotate far enough, then you need to move it a tooth.

rotating counterclockwise seemed to help, but i cant move it do to clearance... so should i pull it out a touch and try and move it clockwise to gain more room???

Yep. Sounds like you've gone too far in the other direction now. Move back a tooth.

If I weren't so busy I'd love to come to CT and help. :(

now i know for a fact i have gone back more than i started with, and i did it one tooth at a time, and no change... still backfiring though the pipes..... maybe i should just call it quits for a while and start all over with the 1100 thing

you're not the only one Erik..don't get down on yourself. It will start working all of the sudden, just keep at it.

Sparky is good at doing it now for a reason ;)

From reading all of your posts, I would say you are headed in the right direction and I can tell your ready to scream. You already gave yourself the best advice...Walk away....Give it a day or two and start anew. I went through the same thing when I was building my own wiring harness. Taking a couple days off really helped me get my head back to what I was trying to do and I could think more clearly.
