How do the 1/4 ton trailers tow?

I am wanting to purchase either a bantam or newer model 1/4 ton military trailer and was wondering how these tow behind the ECJ5? I want to fill it with camping stuff. My jeep specs are below. Thanks in advance for your imput.

I wagged one behind an M151A2 for a number of years. We hauled more than 500 lbs. most of the time. It gave a good jerk to the jeep getting started, but other than that it was fine.

I usually unhitched it to back it up. Never figured out the backing part. R)

 

I agree with these guys.

I towed my Bantam 250 miles home with a Toyota Corolla the day I bought it.... like a dream......but it did bounce a bit on bumps, so I added shocks mounts and shocks.

It pulls great behind both our CJ5 and Liberty. I would give up my CJ5 before the trailer.

 

I have grown accustomed to backing it...the 1/4-turn of play in my steering wheel kind of buffers me from over-correction

 

IKWYM....I've backed a 26' pontoon boat down a LONG/STEEP boat ramp a few times with the CJ5. It's the opposite problem, you can turn the CJ5 all you want and the pontoon barely changes direction.

Backing a short little jet ski trailer with a full-size pickup also prepared me back in high school.

I don't know about the jeep, but I tow my M416 behind my dakota all of the time. don't know it's back there. backs well and even with a pintle hook it is quiet.

 

The red one that was posted on the first page is exactly what I'm looking for to tow behind my YJ. What kind of trailer is that and what do they typically go for?

I've had three of them, my current one is an older M100. I have used it to haul 800lbs of scrap metal to the dump, bring home a few rear ends, a 225 and most recently a SBC along with the engine hoist. This has been either behind my YJ or TJ but I have also pulled it behine my old Commando, an XJ, a FSJ and a 68CJ5. They are really very versatile and are great behind a little jeep.

 

I've pulled mine from Pa to Ca 3 times without a hitch..... (pardon the pun)

 

When pulling these things What is the max amount you can load in them? I was always told they were only rated at 1/4 ton because they would float with 500lbs, but they actually could haul MUCH more.

 

not sure on this, but the 1/4 ton military trailers were designed to float and the conservative 500lb rating is the maximum amount the trailer will safely float (where's that pic of the 2 guys paddling one on the water using rifle stocks for oars). they can easily carry twice that but with no brakes it may not be a good idea. $.02

 

I will find out later this week I guess when I tow mine home... it has surge brakes, but a coupler was added so I don't know if they are functional.

Edit: After reading on the M416, I don't think they are surge brakes at all, I assumed this because of the spring where the lunette used to be...
