I've been looking to put a new clutch in my 72 cj, and my 72 Jeep tech. Service manual shows 72's having a clutch cable set up. But mine is strictly the old rods and bell crank type...not a cable system..Did I miss something? Thanks..:)

Unless you've had it since 72 there is no telling how many changes have been made. '73 had a bellcrank stock. Some PO musta "upgraded" it to the bellcrank setup.

The '72 cable was very problematic. Jeep sent out a service bulletin in late '72 that recommended replacing the cable clutch with the '73 bellcrank clutch. There was a kit that could be installed under warranty. Yours has been upgraded, likely in the early 70s.

I remember back in the mid eighties driving my stepdads 72 renegade and stepping on the clutch, bang, cable broke. Of course I was 16 and just running to the store, but they were adding on the the parking lot and had these cool dirt piles, anyway stepdad wasn't to happy and the cable seemed expensive back then, wonder if they still sell them?
If I would have had this forum in 1985 I could have shown my stepdad the service bulletin and proved it wasn't my fault it broke, but poor engineering.R)
