Now that is a cool rig! Are you going real modern GM with electronic auto trans too? With the length you have you have all kinds of trans options.

it will get whatever i find....it wont be for a while still though.....im going to try to find a complete vehicle...prolly an S-10 truck....if i cna find a late model one thats complete it might just get the fuel injection and all that....otherwise i'd be happy with the TBI version.....prolly will avoid carbs unless i find an offer i cant refuse :)

78Levi....sorry but the bike stuff stayed at the guys house (where i took these pics) he had a neighbor kid that really wanted them. want a 304 and 3 speed? :)

So what are you going to do about a front axle? The S10s use a drivers side drop t-case.

I was not able to find any body for later than 71 when I did my 6. The major change was the firewall. I used wilwood brakes and a custome steering column so that didn't matter. I know where there is a replacement 5 tub the correct year range that has been cut to be stretched into a 6 if you are interested. By the way, where in central Il are you?

JMO - fix the body. All the panels are the same as CJ-5 except for the filler between the front and rear floors, and the side panel fillers. These bodies are really simple compared to passenger cars - no compound curves except in the front fenders and hood. You can do a lot with flat steel patches and a 110V MIG welder.

Re the drivetrain, what do you have in mind? To me, you're tilting at windmills if you replace the AMC V8 with a similar sized V8. It's as good as any of its contemporaries, and what you gain by cheaper parts (with the SBC, not others) you likely lose due to the other changes needed. JMO - you'd take a significant step backwards to replace the 304 with a Cheb V6.

The transmission is a different story. The T-15 is the best 3-speed available, but if I wanted a different transmission and was buying an adapter, I'd also go with the Dana 300 - especially if I chose a transmission other than one of the wide ratio truck 4-speeds.

If you want to go with a pickup truck drivetrain, the NP208 would probably fit, though the 205 is probably too wide for the CJ frame rails.

What's your axle ratio? Are you going to keep the stock axles?

At the risk of injecting even more negativity into the discussion, I used to own a '75 CJ-6 with a hard top. You sure you want a hard top? Have you read the old posts on this topic?

ok...lots of things to go through.....

FourTrail...I'm in Peoria, which puts me about 2 hrs north of you....too far for me to try to recruit you for body work :D also, do you know specifically what other differences there are with pre-71 and later Cj6s tubs? what interferences would i encounter if i used one.

All: for the drive train im not really decided...just throwing ideas out there....i really want to make it a dependable and get decent mileage. the t-case is up for grabs so the gm drive train wouldnt matter with a passenger side drop, since i could keep the d20 (i think they make an adapter at least).......if i could find a good donor for a 4 cyl diesel i'd go that route, but i dont know of anything thats common and wouldnt break the bank......i may still keep the 304...or some AMC V8 if i feel i can get one running well enough to be taken long distances with decent mileage....10mpg isnt going to cut it when driving cross country:D :D

i'm going to keep the axles as is, D30, D44. the prev owner said the axles were 4.10 gear....i havent verified that.

i tore out all the carpet...well most of it......and the body actually looks OK...better than i thought.....so i may keep that around for a while. still want to pull it off and redo the frame though

    mbalbritton: bite me :) :D :) :D

no i havent read them , searched briefly, didnt find em......i'm pretty sure i want a hard top, unless theres a reason you can share not too?

i had one on my CJ7 back in the day and liked it alot.

this ones in really good shape and doesnt need much to make it really nice.

this isnt going to be an off-road jeep, just a cruiser, the only thing i can think of going bad would be the lack of A/C in summer.....but i'd likely want a soft top for summer use (like i did on the '7)

so share your insight, as you seem to have an opinion on this?
