The perfect flat fender build for the rubicon. Not too many of us in flat fenders dragging trailers across the trail anymore.

@Stakebed was saying amazing I can remember 20 years ago, but it was just memorable, so I do remember. For the 51st, nothing stands out, must have been a good, uneventful trip, so I recall nothing in particular. Got the plaque, so I must have been there, maybe I had too good of a time...

Thanks, and welcome to the forum. You're just down the hill from me. I always said it would just be a simple Rubicon jeep. Fix it with a rock and a stick.

Yes, it got a lot tougher, then the County finally had enough of all the shenanigans going on, and the resulting crowds and mess, and reduced some of the rocks to where it is today. I like it now, challenging, and I can still get a trailer though there without flopping it.

We are going to get back to building jeeps soon, but I know how everyone likes photos, and it is the dead of winter, so just a few more. We were finally in camp, our camp, The Swamp, is full to the brim.
It was still primarily CJ's back then, now not so much. But it is still fun to see all the equipment.
And the party starts for us. We have a day and a half to enjoy the beauty of the Springs, the bar, the food, the music, and all our good friends. Then the long slog up Cadillac Monday morning.

Oh no, this is a long story. Much more fun ahead before we get into this winter's upgrades.

April 2004. Well, with the first trip behind me, and many more Rubicon trips in the next several years, we decided to try something different. Johnson Valley, home of the "hammer" trails, and now the site of the huge event King of the Hammers race week. We organized 12 Hi-Lo's jeeps from the Tahoe area, and headed down for a spring week of wheeling. We heard these trails are tough, usually rocky canyons with no bypasses. We even made dash plaques, and named the trip "Sledgehammer or Bust" (S.O.B.). First up was Sledgehammer, a short rocky canyon, that everyone had to winch at least once. There is a waterfall that I winched up, (now called the Plaque Rock), that was so undercut I had a hard time even winching up it, but I did. At the start here, there is a historic sign that point you to the 2 marquee trails, Jack and Sledge.
We had the fishing line out so much, I didn't even bother winding it up half the time. Multiple rocky climbs, it was kind of a blur.
At the top of Sledge is the mailbox. We left a dash plaque and added the "South Lake Tahoe" directional sign. (Still there 15 years later BTW).
Next up was Outer Limits, a longer tougher trail. Half the time I couldn't even see the line.
It was a successful fun trip, good friends, memories and only a little welding. I can say I got up Sledgehammer and got the plaque. Our little camp was the only camp in that whole valley that week. Next week there will be 60000 people there for the race, and we are going back.

Yes, his rig at the time was a '68, V6, SM420. He had just done a spring over, put a Dana 60 in the rear, 44 front. With 35" tires he was hitting that rear diff a lot. He actually flopped it on Sledge, just part of that days' excitement.

April, 2006. Next up, a few years later was Moab. Once again we put together a group of friends that could get a week off, and had capable rigs. Showed up in Moab Easter Sunday, just as the Safari was clearing out. We all stayed at the same motel, headed out on a different trail every day, sometimes 2 trails, if we wanted to do a night run. It's pretty cool, wheel all day, get a shower, restaurant, bed, gas up, do it again. This is the Golden Crack, on the very long Golden Spike trail.
Right about here, when the rear end dropped, I knocked a can off the back, all 4 tires chirping, I climbed out, but had to climb down into the crack to get the can.

This is Devil's Gate on Hell's Revenge. An optional loop off the main trail, it's intimidating, and those oil spots where people have flopped isn't making me feel better. But Woody crawled right up it. We had one jeep in our group slide into the crack on the left near the top, and we winched him.

Neat write up, thanks for posting. The terrain here in the east is so different from your area. The challenge here is not so much rocky but traction from all the slick top soil when it is wet.

I remember rolling up on that crack on golden spike on a dirt bikes with my sons in 2017?.. Coming all the way up poison spider and getting a bit lost then onto golden spike and that crack.... I was like WTF man? I think I opted out of devils gate, but something tells me I did it at least once.. Keep this stuff coming!

I think our trail leader (you know, the guy who has been there before so it's him), accidentally led us into Devils Gate, and I wasn't too keen on it, but there was no way out but up. And if I didn't see jeeps do the Golden Crack before me, I wouldn't believe I could get up it. I'm glad you guys are enjoying it, and I promise we are getting close to jeep-building again.

Spring travel across Utah/Nevada always sketchy. Near Bonneville, this was not fun, but we got home from Moab eventually.
As the years went by, we got out of the rock rolling game, and just became guests on the Jamboree. A lot easier, and more relaxing. We still go on the day before, as soon as they will give us our tickets, and mosey towards the Springs.
Our buddy with the CJ6 became a club member, and started running with us, he has at least 10 Jamborees on me, I think about 40 now. His jeep worked so well, 231, SM420, 3.15 to 1 in a 20 transfer case. 30 with a Lockright in the front, 44 and Detroit in the rear. 33-10.50 BFG's, work great. Our deal was, he brings the hot shower, we bring the winch. the cargo area of a 6 is insane, and I have always been jealous.
We have had a lot of good runs, and a few with some sort of breakage, but they are all good.
Around this time, the Little Sluice was so chewed we had to go around for obvious reasons. Now, it has become more manageable.
