It's more fun than should be allowed. And exhilarating to get a jeep you build to do this.

I did. I put a Rubicon sticker on the cowl side above the dent.

Moving on, we are at the cell phone tree, top of Walker hill at 1 PM. Everyone got their messages.

Nick said he wanted to try soup bowl, I vetoed that idea. I look back, yep.

Almost had it, but denied. Next some of our group went through the little sluice, we went around so we would have time for a swim in Spider Lake, and a nice lunch stop (2 PM).

We were making good time, and the goal was to get to the Springs in one shot, today. It kind of reminded me of an ongoing no-hitter in baseball- no one wanted to jinx it by saying anything. Just keep it moving and shut up. Rolling into Buck Island at about 4, there are some challenging, but fun, spots here.
Jeep Can Rock, guys have been knocking cans off their jeeps here for decades. It's kind of a new line that is tricky, (we did it at night last year).

The Martini Tree. Top of the hill before the Big Sluice. It cracked me up to see what time it was, 5 o'clock somewhere.
The turn at the top of Big Sluice. My jeep starts smelling the barn about here, and it's all down hill to camp.

OK guys, hope I'm not boring anyone. Down the Big Sluice, and what used to be called the Toyota Cruncher. (Now it's the JL cruncher).

And we are in the Springs at 6 PM! This is huge to me. A 7 hour run, with a 1 hour lunch. Haven't done that in a while. A testament to 5 experienced drivers, 5 well-built rigs, short breaks, and no breakage. I popped up my tent, got in my trunks, cracked a beer, and hit the river.

Our go-to trail day dinner is from the old Boy Scout in me. Foil packs, pre-made, and very tasty, and easy, no matter where you are. We have done these on the side of the trail, after a long day. To do them in camp means a lot. It really beats the second half of the sandwich you bought yesterday.

Shrimp, sausage, lemon, potatoes, corn, garlic, spices. It's great first night chow.

Cool camp setup. I can tell you have camped before. I see many things that are simple but really go a long way making camp comfortable and convenient. Are campfires allowed? or is it too dry? :watch:.

I've been camping for a long time. It is always evolving, for instance we decided on a lot of dutch oven meals this year. Yes, campfires were allowed, (on the private property), and the caretaker even supplied the wood. On the public property section of the trail, they are already done for the year.

Morning. We are river front, and there is only one other camp, of 3 jeeps, we can see in main camp. The river looks inviting.
Nick got a little brown with a lure, then returned it to the river.

Mountain Man Breakfast in the aluminum dutch oven. Eggs, hash browns, peppers, onion, sausage, cheese. Very hearty and easy, and well-liked.
We have 3 days here, so I went for a little explore on the west side of the river, looking for some mine diggings, this is looking up river, the bridge in the distance. All kinds of stuff to explore here.
Had a good day of exploring, horseshoes, winching logs out of the swimming hole, swimming, relaxing. Oh, and I did look under the jeeps for anything of concern. Hawaiian chicken skewers for dinner.

The historic site of Rubicon Soda Springs https://rubiconsprings.com/ is a privately owned (by jeep-friendly families) campground, right in the middle of the Rubicon Trail. It has a caretaker (that lives off grid in a cabin), outhouses, fire rings, tables, and great swimming, fishing, exploring, as it is right on the edge of Desolation Wilderness.
It is so remote and wild, it is a stunning place to stay, so our goal is always to get the western side of the trail behind us, then make a nice camp and stay for a few days. We hang out, drink beer, play horseshoes, chat with other jeepers, and old friends. For me, it is like a national park, just for jeeps. All like-minded folks, everyone helping each other out. And very social. I like that everyone there is in the same boat, it's not like you arrive and there are motorhomes and generators. Everyone got there the same way, and brought what they could fit in their jeep. The way out to Lake Tahoe and pavement is about 4 hours, via Cadillac Hill, which I hate. But, as was pointed out, if Cadillac hill wasn't there with its challenges, this place would be over run with FJ cruisers with roof top tents.

There was a flood that went through camp last October, so several things are rearranged, or flat out missing. Mark told me there was about 2 feet of water throughout main camp. The directional sign is gone. This is Nick several years ago. I like how either direction is not advisable.
We always catch a bunch of crawdads for happy hour, but this year was pretty slim, maybe from the flood.
