Has anyone used this specific unit, in the Tracloc carrier? I'm wondering if the install will be more difficult.

I installed one many years ago (around 20ish) and I remember it being more difficult than in a standard open case but not horrible.

    Well, big problem.
The original pinion shaft was held in by 2 snap rings. The new one with the Powertrax is supposed to be held in by a bolt, which my case has no provision for. What to do?

I would contact the manufacturer tech line and ask that same question, see what they have to suggest for your situation

I plan to....but today's Sunday. Tomorrow's a holiday. I work Tuesday-Saturday. So it'll be 8 days till I can do that. I'm leaving for Leadville at the end of this month, and my sister's wedding is taking up one weekend this month. This project that I thought I'd get done today has all of a sudden become a serious problem.

Chuck it in a drill and file a groove in it with a dremal and a cut off wheel. :twist:

Lock-tite and a few wraps of duct tape around the case and that shouldn't go anywhere.

    Seriously though, that's annoying.

    Doug,
The ring gear will stop it from traveling out , one way. I recall on my trac-loc install that my series 3 case had that screw . If you want to keep going , your gonna need to drill & tap your case on just the one side . That will " Stop " the new shaft on the opposite side . Perhaps you could Emery cloth clean your old shaft & see if you can use the snap rings on your new install ? ...... I dunno , just try'n to help you along.

The old shaft won't work with the new locker, the snap rings are in the wrong place.
I was considering drilling the case for a couple of small set screws.

Yes Sir , You just have to drill & Tap the case on the opposite " yoke " of the Ring gear to use only one of about a 1/4 " by about a 1 1/2 " all thread type set screw . If you can find one that long . You could make one by using a cut off all thread bolt & slot the head of it. This stop bolt only goes deep enough to just about go thru the shaft. It's purpose is just to hold the shaft form walking, as you may already know. You can do it !

Na Doug seriously, what gears are you running?
My 5.38s and 4.27s block that shaft from coming out. Are 3.73's the same?

I recall that Joe is correct here, Doug. Double check by placing the shaft in & then put the Ring gear on . It should stop the shaft from moving both ways & then you'll be good to go.

The shaft can't slide out with the ring gear in place, but it can move back and forth about an inch. Seems like a bad idea.

Yeah. It can't slide out, but it can come into contact with the end of the pinion gear. Nothing good will come from that.

Oil will make a mess of Duct tape, wire might be better if it can be kept clear of the gears.

Oh yeah, both good & bad.
I'll probably be looking at a selectable locker in the not too distant future.
