As we all know a jeep is never finished. Haven't had much free time to tinker with the jeep but over the last few weeks I've been able to squeeze in and hour or two after work. The weekend before last years rubicon run i tried putting in the champion 3 core radiator and partsdude fan shroud but because of how high i mounted the steering gear box the steering shaft interfered with the lower corner of the radiator. I would need to notch the radiator tank for clearance but i didn't have a way to weld aluminum so it got put on hold. On Black Friday i found a deal on a ac/dc tig welder that i couldn't pass up. I notched the radiator and added a bung for a drain plug. The welds aren't pretty but they dont leak so far.

The DUI distributor and livewires i ordered back in june took quite a bit longer than expected, almost 13 weeks. Due to the extended length of the distributor shaft i didn't have to do and grinding for clearance and there is plenty of room to rotate for timing. Also added a new holddown and ARP holddown stud along with summit wire separators. Almost forgot to add that the vacuum advance can was charged so the vacuum line wouldn't hit the fan.

My starter was sounding a bit sluggish and i decided to replace it with the compact powermaster unit Norcal69 posted about awhile back and it works much better that the stock starter. Hopefully since its smaller and not as close to the headers the longevity is better.

In Buildflycrash's thread about his power steering vs power brakes thread someone posted that Brennans Garage made a bracket to put a newer TC style pump on a dauntless. Since i was going to replace my pump anyway i decided to give the tc pump a try. I used all the recommended parts on brennan page and everything went together perfectly and i was ableto reuse the hoses. Haven't had a chance to drive it with the new pump but i like how compact of a package it is compared to the old style Saginaw pump.

So much good in this photo dude, great work! Love that DUI and the packaging on that pump is so clean and uncluttered. Nice work!

Lots of nice work. Is a power brake booster in the future plans?

No, the manual brakes work great and dont take much effort at the pedal.

I want to, my carb was giving me lots of issues last time so i definitely want to get efi installed and dialed in first. I still cant decide what system to go with. I like that GM TBI has long record of being reliable and every parts store in the country has parts for it. I like that the holley sniper is a direct bolt on and there is an option for an intank fuel pump with only a single feed line. My hang up with the holley is that there aren't many people running them on an oddfire and i dont know how the throttle body mounted ecm holds up long term.

I would go over a gm tbi set-up. Maybe a litte harder to set-up but one you got it you wont touch it anymore. And as you said part are easy to source.

I ended up buying a gm tbi kit from Affordable Fuel Injection. It was delivered a couple weeks ago. So faw i have only taken the plastic loom off the harness and started planning out the wiring layout and adding wires for the crank trigger. For the fuel pump i went with an electric in-tank conversion kit from Tanks Inc. with a tbi rated walbro pump. I put in for vacation in April and plan on installing it then.

My kit from AFI has been worth it. I'ld get some fuel through the injectors asap. They use a cleaner that can cause the injectors to stick and you get to tap it unkindly with a hammer like a stuck starter.

My injectors were stuck open on my first start.
I called tech support and they said it's the cleaner they use and to tap it with a big wrench.

I'll definitely watch for that, thanks for the tip. There was a little bit of red-ish color liquid in the fuel inlet fitting. I assume its from bench testing the throttle body after rebuilding.

I drove the jeep on Saturday since it was 95 degrees outside and i got to see how the new radiator does in warm weather. The temp stayed right at 170-175 in city and freeway driving. It got up to 185 on a steep grade. Overall im happy with the radiator and shroud but the stock style fan just doesn't pull enough air at a 600rpm idle. Engine temp goes up to 230 after im stopped and idling for a few minutes but drops quickly once i get moving again.

One other small hiccup was a hose fitting on the power steering cooler started leaking. Since its right infront of the radiator the fan sucked the fluid through the radiator and flung it all over the front of the engine. My arms dont fit through the grill so im going to have to pull the radiator to fix the leak :censored:

Are you using the stock fuel tank? I'd like to know which in-tank conversion kit you got and if is was a straightforward install. I'm swapping a 4.3l with TBI Into an early cj5.
    Thanks

I got my tbi kit from the same place (affordable fuel injection) but used the stock tank, had fuel starvation issues and added a "surge tank" (modified marine fuel filter) to get around on less than a half tank.

I guess i should give an up date on the AFI tbi. It took a lot longer to install than i wanted due to lack of fee time and trying to do several other projects at the same time. The install was straight forward, only challenge was the crank trigger. I shamelessly stole norcal69's idea be using a corvette sensor mounted off the fuel pump block off with 3 bolts as nodes. It fired right up, with a high idle and a little rich . I reset the iac and adjusted the idle to 675-700 and it runs great. AFI's base tune is pretty good so far and it drives better than the carb ever did. After driving the jeep for a couple weeks im very happy with the tbi set up.

Does your tank have a sump? Any issues with fuel delivery on a partial tank?
