the GM based TBI kits on the v8 would be a decent cost savings and good parts availability.
Run hard lines along frame up to the fuel pump area.
When you go fuel injection you can use that with a surge tank and pump fed by the mechanical pump. The goal is to seperate air and fuel so the high pressure pump and injectors always have clean fuel since there is not a float bowl anymore.
You could have a rear inline pump but it's been a pain in the butt working on the pump and filter below the fuel level. An in tank pump is ideal with good fluid control to keep it happy.

The fuel pressure is totally dependent on the system used and even the size of the injectors/displacement/cam. I think I would make a provision for a good adjustable fuel regulator but even there, you need to know if it is vacuum modulated and if it has the fuel return line port built-in. It is probably worth spending some time deciding which EFI system will be used so you can minimize future modifications. Or better, just bite the bullet and do it.

This is what I know......If your using injectors at 58 PSI , you need a hot wired Walboro electric pump in your tank. If you loose fuel pressure, the starving detonation will blow your head Gaskets for sure.

Not doing the EFI anytime soon. One project at a time.

In the meanwhile, I plan on putting couplers at the base of the firewall so I can easily re-plumb the under the hood parts when the time comes. The rest of the lines will work with the carb or EFI.

When I do go EFI, I'll most likely go with a Holley Sniper and probably spend the big bucks on their in-tank pump with hydramat. Not a fan of TBI setups with the GM computer needing software and a chip burner to do tuning. Would much rather have something with tunability built in. A TBI with a Megasquirt would work but it costs as much as the Holley setup when you're done and is a lot more work. Been there, done that with the 347 in my old Mustang.

Had time to get back at the floorboards tonight.

    All the bolts are out:

Using a box knife to cut the bedliner and some scrapers to pry the floorboard up:

    And it's out!:

What a pain in the butt. Don't ever bed-line anything you might change some day. Next is disconnecting stuff underneath to prep for dropping the transmission/transfer case.

And as requested, here's the routing of the current nylon fuel lines.

Rubber hoses come from the sending unit in the tank and out to the nylon lines near the right frame rail. The nlyon lines are attached to the body with bendable metal tabs as Homersdog noted in a previous post::

After passing over the crossframe in front of the rear axle, they turn in towards the center of the Jeep and pass over the transfer case:

From there, they travel along the side of the transmission and up behind the bellhousing:

They terminate on firewall behind the engine and rubber hoses connect them to the steel lines that go over the engine along the left valve cover (wrapped in insulation in this picture:

Then they pass down the right side of the front cover and connect to the fuel pump with hoses. As near as I can tell, whoever put the V8 in the Jeep bent the original V6 tubes enough to sort of work. The hoses down at the pump are a bit of a mess because the bent V6 pipes and the V8 fuel pump having the connections pointing in different directions. That should be a bit cleaner after re-plumbing things:

I have no idea why Jeep ran the pipes over the top of the motor on the rear tank Jeeps. It seems like a recipe for vapor lock. Not only does it pass over the hot engine, but the pump has to lift the fuel much higher than the tank to do so.

Getting coser to dropping the old transmission.

    Skidplate off and driveshafts out:

Don't need to worry much about the skid plate rusting out:

    Parking brake disconnected:

    And the clutch:

I need to figure out how I'm going hold up the back of the engine and I can undo the bellhousing/crossframe bolts and drop it out. I need to measure the drivetrain angle before I do any of that. I'd like to match it back to where it is now.

I have begun dropping the transmission down using an engine hoist. I take off the shift tower, thread in some eyebolts and let it down easy. I use a floor jack and a block of wood to keep the engine at the angle it needs to be to slide it back.

With a smaller transmission like a T-90 or T-14 or similar this is a bit over kill, but my SM420 is heavy. Your T18 will be similarly so.

Yep, the plan is to use the engine hoist through the side of the Jeep. I usually use a jack under the oil pan, but since my jacks leak slowly and it might take a while to modify/built the crossframe, I'm thinking of a bridge over the fenders and a strap or some ready rod to hold the back up.

A good, large scissors jack is what I use to keep the engine in position. They don't leak down-----

420's are a little weighty but pale compared to the 465. I think back to my more youthful days and stuffing the SM465 in the 74 C30 without anything but arms and knees-in the dirt.

Ratchet straps around the frame work until they melt. When I did the initial v6 swap I had a 2x4 from cowl to the snow plow lift with a strap here there and everywhere.

When it sits for a while I use a jack stand and a2x4 on top under the pan and cribbing underneath the stand to the desired height

Don't know if it would work in your situation but I have used a large 3inch wide ratchet strap from frame rail to frame rail over the top and under the bell housing to support, it is then adjustable to raise or lower as needed too. I have used a piece of heavy 2x2 tubing across the top of the spring stacks with wood shims between oil pan and tubing on trucks.

nice. Not sure how i missed this one.

i forgot how heavy my t98/18/od were when i got to that spot, got a cardboard fright dolly, acooped it up in my arms lifted it, and went ooof, dont drop it… it was interesting getting down low with it while not ruining my back or ripping my single-pack ab…

Almost no progress on the '71 this weekend. Too busy working on the barn, removing snow tires and throwing my back out again in the process. Even the simplest well planned Jeep tasks seem to require getting on and off the creeper 6 times to find the proper tool. Ugh.

I did get the speedo cable unhooked, the starter out, and the bellhousing front cover off. All that's left is bellhousing bolts, pulling the top cover off the transmission and the crossframe bolts. I have my wife scheduled to help me drop it out one night this week.

I picked up a compact starter (ask recommended byt NorCal69) for half price on Ebay, so I'll put that in when it goes back together. It's interesting seeing them side by side. Besides the size, the new one is also way lighter:

I just realized the bellhousing front plate that came with my extra motor is home made. I guess I'll clean and use the factory one with the beads:

This may disappoint some folks, but I found out the OEM style nylon fuel line is cheap and readily available. For now, I'm just going to rerun them as is and save the NiCop redo until the Fuel injection goes in:

Fit your new starter up to the block and make sure the stock cover plate does not interfere with the starter seating completely flat against the block. There may be a reason that home brew version is truncated like that. I ended up making my own for the sbc's using the mini starters also. I used 0.090" 5052 for that.
