Another small project on the way to getting the T18 installed.

This is the factory clutch cable bracket on the transmission/transfer case:

The T18 is almost exactly 1 1/2" longer than the original T-14/factory adapter. I could have taken the easy way out and extended the clutch cable with some ready-rod, but part of this hobby is learning to fabricate. I decided to modify the bracket.

Novak left a nice flat spot on the adapter for and additional bolt so I drilled and tapped it:

Then I marked the bracket for cutting. The line that's horizontal in the picture is aligned with the pad on the adapter:

I cut some 3/16 scrap into the right shapes, cleaned the weld areas and held the mess together with magnets for tacking:

I still need to work on the prettiness of my welds but at least they are solid:

After some cleanup with the grinder and drilling the new hole, it fits well and puts the cable in the factory location:

First side paint is drying. I'll flip it over and paint the other side in the morning:

Great job on the new bracket! I need to do something similar on my t18 swap. I haven't gotten to that point yet though

    Looks great!

In a previous life many years a go I was an industrial painter for tooling and aircraft parts. What we would do with parts like that is always hang them. TIG welding rod 3/32s is perfect. Just make a hook, hang the parts and shoot them. If youre wearing a long painters glove and Tyveks, you take the part off the rack, hold it by the wire hook and coat every side of it, then just hang it back up to cure and hope the paint doesn't jump off or you didn't make curtains..Some of the stuff I made had to have mil spec thickness coating of several different primers or paints.. Masking off the inside of bolt holes.. Special masking procedures, etc..

This was a terrible job in an old aircraft hanger full of welders and explosive paint gas...The guy I worked with sat across from me and pulled out his own tooth while working with pliers... No joke. Thats the kind of place it was.

Painted and installed. Pardon the rusty head on the allen bolt. It's the only one I could find in my bucket-o-bolts:

I use socket head screws all the time. All black oxide, so they rust. I’m of the opinion that by the time they get rusty, I have already taken it apart twice at least..they can’t get too bad then.

I threw my back out last weekend so it's been a week of no work in the shop. It wasn't a total loss. I got taxes and some other stuff done in the house. After the week of stretching, using a heating pad, and rest I'm mobile enough again to get back to work (carefully).

I made this bracket for the overdrive shifter a while back. While it feels plenty strong, Warloch's comment about someone bending a similar bracket and my own engineering pride made me want to a gusset. After all, I'm supposed to be learning fabrication. Paint stripped off for welding:

I used Cardboard Aided Design to cut out this gusset form some 1/8" bar stock:

I clamped it in the vise and bent the large radius around the bracket by hand. I used the vice and a hammer to make the sharp bend on the left side:

I beveled the edge of the bracket to guarantee good weld penetration since I wasn't planning on welding the back side:

    Welded up:

    Ground down and test fit:

    Should be much stronger now:

    Repainted and drying overnight:

I Like it, I would never of thought of making a gusset quite like that. Maybe you could start a fabrication class, I could be your first student.:bananatool:

Only issue I see is it puts the pivot pin in a single sheer. If it has the pin welded in, a bushing added to better pivot or another tang that wraps around to put the pivot in a double sheer it will feel better in your hand when shifting and have fewer issues with slop.
But as it is it is better than the originals

OK, fine. I wasn't going to bother with double shear since it's already sturdier than anything Warn, Atlas, or Herm make. SIgh, ...but I'm supposed to be fabricating well engineered stuff.

    How is this?

It’s perfect. You should build another. One piece, stronger, lighter.

I spent a week once with a wire cup on a grinder removing liner from cabinets on a fire truck. Get some good lung protection and a face shield.

Been too cold to do anything in the shop this week, but I did pick this up from a neighbor to add to my trail spares:

The actual plan is to rebuilt this one so the Jeep can stay running until it's ready. The current motor runs well but smokes pretty badly. This is from a '69 Skylark with 89,000 miles and looks clean inside the valve cover. It ran when the neighbors bought the car but they say it had a rod knock. I'll get it torn apart in the next few weeks and assess. I'm hoping rings and bearings will freshen it up enough. I'm probably not that lucky but we'll see.

Plan on a cam and lifters for sure. You will probably see round lobes and crushed lifters.
