Agree, there was more than one color used. I bought my '67 from the family of the original owner, who took some pictures of it shortly after purchasing the Jeep in late 1966. Here's an enlargement of one of those photos where you can see the original black JEEP lettering. The original body paint color was (and still is) Prairie Gold.

Here's what it looks like today. I used a decal for the JEEP lettering.

Can't believe it's been almost 7 years, but these are still on the Jeep and still look good!

I recall reading here, a few years back, someone used a Cigarette filter as a roller and a paperclip as the handle. Tape a little around the sides and just a very quick and easy job.

So what would be the correct color on Presidential Red #2 from 1966 - white?

Yep....here's what appears to be a factory photo of a '66 in red, though it may be Indian Ceramic. (I don't know where those hubcaps came from, though....)

Interestingly my President Red '71 still has original paint and there is no sign of the letters having been painted. AMC got cheap that year?

Oddly enough, the new for that year logo on the tailgate is painted. I like how the new lower case logo on the tailgate doesn't match the upper case logo on the fender. Maybe that's why they didn't paint the fender logo?

Rubicloak recently mentioned to me that one of the two CJ's he has, which I believe are both '71's, doesn't have the JEEP logos on the sides painted - but the other one does. Maybe he'll chime in here....

Maybe the letter painting guy had liquid lunches on Fridays and never got to painting the letters in the afternoon.

Rubicloak probably knows more about Jeep 69-71 Jeep inconsistencies than anyone at this point. It's crazy how many running changes there were ...or things that just got missed on the assembly line.

My 69 yes, my 70 yes. My two 71's Feb and Mar do not. All four had the "Jeep" on the tailgate painted. None had the 4 Wheel Drive stenciled on the tailgate. 70, 71 and 71 all original paint.

Perhaps Jeep stopped painting the cowl "Jeep" in 71?

Beyond frustrating the amount of inconsistencies. Still trying to find a rhyme or reason as to why some sides were stenciled and others weren't. Or for that matter, why some had the 4 wheel drive stenciled on the tailgate and others didn't

My '67 pres. red has original white letters. And for the record, my dad's white '66 had black letters.

Is the “4 wheel drive” stencil on your 67 white?

I used model paint from Hobby Lobby and hand painted them using fine tip brushes for the edges then filled in with a wider brush. Did this for the side letters and the tailgate. You can certainly tell up close I hadn painted them lol.

I bought one of these JEEP side panel decal sets to use after I had the body repainted a couple of years ago, then misplaced it and had to buy another set. I just found the first set tonight, and scanned it as a 600 dpi image in .tiff, .jpeg, and .pdf for use in making stencil masks for painting.

Google Drive links to each of these formats are below - you can download your pick. When at the correct scale, the JEEP lettering should be 4-9/16" in length (measured horizontally from the tip of the J to the outside of the curve on the P), and 1-7/16" in height.

    This is great Maury.

Also, if anyone else wants to try handpainting the Jeep letters as I will soon do, I drew and test laser cut a stencil in scrap cardboard that traces the base parts of the JEEP letters that are flat against the body, which should help as a mask for the body but allow a roller to go on the tops of the letters when cut into thin paper. Happy to share the file or make stencils for anyone.

I also made a stencil for the “4 WHEEL DRIVE” on the tailgate, which I will cut into acetate that I spray adhere to the tailgate so the spray paint doesn’t run.

Happy to share all of this as you did Maury.

As a body shop owner/tech, I would scuff wherever you’re going to paint. You can use a red scuff pad from an auto paint store or a scotchbrite from the grocery store.
