The body and paint shop I hired, Al’s Rod and Custom, put color and clear on the body today in Sparks.

I’m kinda blown away…given how bad I am at metal repair, and how this turned out! Here’s some pics from their paint booth today versus my pics from earlier in the project. 7BE4AE15-4F8C-4844-BE6A-57F69ABEEAA1.jpeg CBBEC15D-3F00-4F55-9A78-52EA0C2515AF.jpeg 9FC7231F-6C16-4EE5-910A-E9DC22907EA7.jpeg 6363AA5D-317A-4DD2-AABF-1CC63183FB39.jpeg 940A14F3-BF91-4264-8990-615E09F313DA.jpeg E26F7AA5-56DC-46F3-8897-59CF9E5E9394.jpeg 6F4F9D36-D323-47CB-B9F8-A4DCD4B6AB8F.jpeg EE6502E3-8B75-4A9C-BAE1-71E56D00E2E9.jpeg C0A2E654-23F7-4111-AD3E-97C19B1B9223.jpeg EF8DA6F5-BFE7-4823-9EE8-F53006A1D32A.jpeg

Two observations off the top of my head:

    1. That paint job looks fantastic; and
    2. You are apparently a MUCH better metal worker that you thought you were.

    GREAT JOB!

Spirits buoyed by Chris Boswell's sseason-prolonging overtime 3 points, I managed to get vertical and off the couch despite the nasty daycare cold that feels suspiciously like the first time I had COVID in 2020 despite testing negative yesterday (?). I got the garage ready for picking up the body next weekend and dropping it on the chassis.

As expected the to-do list got a lot longer, but I want to try to button up as much as I can while I can reach everything. I've got some questions, hopefully you guys can help me out.

Grill welting - should I use these split rivets that came with the new welting that goes along the top of the grill? Or should I clean up and put back in the original (?) ones? There are three threaded clips in the bag with the original ones and the old welting. Where do these go?
    UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_8849.jpg

The new windshield bottom gasket that I got from Kaiser Willys is of course nothing like the original.

    UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_8846.jpg

The thick edge is about 0.25" less thick than the original, and there are no impregnated washers in it, just small holes. Should I send this back and source another? Or just add washers and run it?
    UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_884c.jpg UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_884a.jpg

And - I need to make a call on these hinges. THe chrome from up in the windshield is as expected really bad. But, the part that actually sticks out is decent and the chrome is polishable. Should I bead blast these and drop them at the chrome shop for probably another $150 (?) or should I just bead blast the parts that are bad, and spray them with primer and stick them up in the frame?

    UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_884b.jpg UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_8847.jpg

    What do you guys think?

I would use the original spring clips. I never had any threaded fastener to attach the grill welting on mine, just the spring clips. (I can count how many there are)

The windshield to hood gasket seems to be a hit and miss from reading others experiences. I bought my replacement off eBay. (It’s not NOS, I was unable to find one.) The fitment was perfect, and all holes lined up. It does not have the impregnated washers. The condition of the original was so bad and worn, I never checked to see any difference in thickness. But, the windshield does sit tight.

The chrome on the hinge that goes up into the windshield, there is a small exposed outside corner that you do see! Is the chrome still intact at this spot? You’ve come this far, for the extra $150 I would get it all rechromed.

@Oldpappy went through this last year and found one that fits well on Ebay. Based on his recommendation, I also bought and installed same one last year and am happy with it:
It fits great and the windshield sits at the right angle when up. I pried the washers out of the old gasket to re-used them.

@Oldpappy did you get the chance to side by side this Ebay one and the KW (likely Omix) one? Are they different/ It's hard to tell in the Ebay pics

I found some pics that show where the spring cllips go - wondering why I have three though?

I'm picking up the body Saturday. Got a UHaul cargo trailer lined up so I don't have to worry about road sand on the way up I-80. Going to build a dunnage lumber rack for it to sit on after work today.

I really had hoped to have some mentorship to fix the leaks and spongy pedal in my brakes before I got the tub on, but that might not happen at this point as my buddy who was supposed to help me is unable to do so. I'm on my own...can you guys help? @Fireball @timsresort @maurywhurt?

Here is the situation, maybe you guys can give me some pointers if I try to dive into fixing them tomorrow or Thursday.....as you know I have never worked on vehicles before, I know next to nothing about brakes. I've never bled a brake system before this 1st attempt.

System: I have discs in the front, and 11" drums in the rear. I did not adjust the drums at all after installing them on the axle. I have a new dual reservoir master cylinder, and a proportioning valve. I ran hard lines throughout the system, and hoses from the rear crossmember to the axle Tee, and from each front caliper to the frame. I have not yet operated the vehicle under its own power. I bench bled the master cylinder per the manufacturer's directions.

Symptom #1: The brake pedal am is somewhat soft when depressed and upon returning. If no brake fluid is 0, and 10 is not moving, I'd say it's a 6-7.

Symptom #2: There are two drip leaks at the master, and on the top of the PV around the top-front flare nut, that show a few minutes after pumping the pedal.

Diagnosis? I suspect that I either A) made a bad flare, or B) was too timid in tightening down the flare nuts at these locations (How hard do you need to snug these?)

So to me logic would dictate that I should first try and snug up these flare nuts, and then re-bleed. This means to open up the bleeders one at a time, farthest away first (hopefully with an assistant this time) and some fresh fluid, pump the pedal (not "pump" per se, just in/out, don't want to cavitate the bubbles), and really ensure all air is out. Then check for leaks again.

Do I need to take the calipers off and turn them up to let any air out?

Anything else I can do? Besides call AAA and have it towed to a mechanic! (Joking).

Thanks guys! I really don't want to have to take the tub off again after Saturday!

Bad flares are easier to make than good ones! Tightening the nut may work but redoing it is much better. You’ll end up with stripped nuts and Vicegrips otherwise.

The way you describe bleeding is correct only with Auto bleeders. With regular valves you must open and close the valve while the brake pedal is depressed or it just sucks air back in.

Have assistant Pump pedal 3x. Hold pedal. Open valve. Pedal should sink some. Close valve. Repeat until fluid flows with Zero bubbles. Attaching a piece of clear hose to the bleeder makes it easy to see if any bubbles are still in there and you collect the fluid for disposal instead of pumping it out on the floor.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how do I examine a flare to tell what could be bad? I used a brand-new TGR rotating die vice mounted flaring tool and went pretty slowly and methodically, and deburred the cuts first.

I don't have a ton of experience in this either, I'd guess that if you torqued it to 30-40lbs and it still leaked there was a problem with the flare. I've had to rework a few and when there right they don't leak.

I’ll start there. You mean in-lbs right? I only have two leaky flares in the whole system so I either didn’t flare these right or didn’t tighten them down enough.

A buddy came over last night and we re-bled all four wheels, and I also tightened the leaky flare nuts. Air came out both rear wheels, for a good while.

upon cracking the cylinder cover it looked like this:
    CB23AC74-1AC1-447D-8EE9-6C73A3F78A65.jpeg

I’d say we cycled through a whole small bottle of brake fluid before it started streaming into the bottle with no bubbles. The pedal got a lot harder…so I hope this is it with the brakes.

Hopefully in a few weeks I get to take a tentative drive around the block and check them out under load.

What is the adjustment procedure necessary from this point forward with new 11” drums on the rear?
