    Hello,
I ordered an Omix 12006.07 frame to replace the rotted one on my 1968ish CJ5. It was a bottom mounted wiper frame. I went to put it together today and found that the glass seems wrong. The glass is cut rectangular with no arch but the frame clearly has an arch on top. The glass is 13x55.75".
What's going on here? Is there a different bottom mounted wiper frame i should have gotten? Did someone stuff the wrong glass in the old frame? Unfortunately I don't have the old frame any longer.

    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ken

Obviously that glass will not fit that frame.

Was the frame it came out of also a bottom mount for the wipers?

    welcome to aftermarket
the original glass appears to be for top mounted wipers
my aftermarket frame wouldn't fit the original curved glass . in my case glass was larger than the opening
local glass shop cut and installed a new one

Yes, it was a bottom mounted wiper frame on the original. This confuses me as I thought there were only 2 types of ECJ5 windshield frames, top and bottom mounted wipers. I'm not sure what the original frame would have been. It appears the original may have been for bottom mounted wipers but used the older style glass?

Pretty sure there were 2 bottom wiper frames. For a short period it was bottom mount wipers, flat top glass and shortly it was switched to bottom wipers, arched top glass. Most people appreciate the added visibility up top. I agree with the suggestion of having a glass shop cut you one to fit, unless you are trying to stick to originality over functionality.

That sounds like what I had then. Since this Jeep is a conglomeration of parts I will probably try and get glass cut for the frame I have. Does this flat top bottom wiper frame even exist in the aftermarket?

'68 and early '69 Jeeps had flat-topped glass and bottom mount wipers. Here you can see the flat-top bottom-wiper windshield on my '69 and the curved-top bottom-wiper one on my '71 side-by-side:

Since it was a one year thing, nobody is reproducing the flat-top bottom wiper-windshield. Your options are:
    • Get some curved top glass for the windshield you have.
    • Get a repo top wiper windshield and modify it into a bottom wiper setup.
If you're not looking for originality, the curved top glass is a lot nicer to see out of. It doesn't look like much but it makes a big difference.

Also note the layout of the footman loops on the hood is different between the two windshields. The flat top has the standoffs on the windshield with one short footman loop to strap the windshield down and a tall one to clip the hood to the windshield when the hood is up:

The curved top windshield has no space for standoffs or the hook to hold the hood open. It has the same small footman loop for strapping the windshield down, but has two tall rubber coated footman loops to act as standoffs. Since the latch to hold the hood open is gone they came with a prop rod for the hood:

The standoff loops mounted to the hood on the curved glass frame is an advantage because the older frame with the standoffs on the frame will scuff the paint on the hood.

Thanks for the replies, lots of great info. I will find a shop and get some glass cut for the curved windshield.
I hope someone makes repro hood standoffs. I once had a set and didn't know what they were. Naturally I tossed them cleaning out one day...

Will the top still mate correctly with the w/s frame if he switches from straight to arched?

As a side note the M38A1 frame is the straight type but has an arched top channel. It differed from the contemporaneous CJ5 in this detail.

Would someone with this style footman loop arrangement on their hood be willing to post location information? I'm needing to drill my hood for the windshield supports but don't have an old hood to reference. Thanks!

Which of the two styles do you need? Curved top or flat top? I can try to measure a hoot tonight.

Ken, I had my glass cut twice at Veterans Glass on Southfield Between Fort Street and Jefferson, in Lincoln Park, I had a grey glass made, too dark, could not see through it when the top was off too dark. I had another glass cut in Easy Eye Green, like factory glass. Back then it was around $ 100.00, that was in 2007 or so, that was installed. Probably more today, but they are nice people to work with. Good Luck, Rick

not sure this is helpful but here are where my hood footman loops are located. I can take other measurements if needed. This is on a 1970 cj5. Mine has the curved windshield as well.

center one is lined up directly in line with the windshield wiper washer nozzle.

    upload_2022-1-25_22-27-8.jpeg

This is the drivers side one measured from the edge of the hood.
    upload_2022-1-25_22-29-36.jpeg

same one measured from top edge of the hood.
    upload_2022-1-25_22-30-45.jpeg

    hope this helps
