Work was kind enough to buy me a new welding hood, as I didnt want to carry my personal one around the world in the off chance that it gets stolen, or broken. I dont weld much but when you need it you needed. However, the new one is so much better that I might accidently leave it at home and accidently bring my personal one along.

Bought a Lincoln 3250D with C4 glass technology. and I have to say its worlds above my Speedglass. It has more of a light blue light vs the green. everything is so much clearer, both before and during welding.

The only thing I dont like is that you have to have it up slightly to turn it on or adjust, where with the speedglass i could just poke my hand in there. but thats probably true for all pop up hoods

the pop up function is also nice.

I have a speedglas. Its been a great hood, has the side lights etc.. But a couple weeks ago I had to mess with the settings for the fist time to get it to not flash me while Tig welding. This was not low amperage or stainless or aluminum, but mild steel at 80-100 amps.. So, what do you think about the flip up option. Will it break, get crud in there or have other problems? If you can see the weld puddle better, why? I don't weld everyday, but enough to spend money on this stuff.

I think if I was mostly welding with tig i would of bought a none flip up. I have a terrible habit of flipping up the hood and then proceeding to use the chipping hammer or getting lazy and grabbing the grinder to just clean something up real "quick" and not putting on my shield. I do wear safety glasses so I think those will protect me. but more then enough time i have had stuff fly around them or something hits my face while chipping slag off.

Both hoods on, old practice aluminum piece

I dont know how well the flip up function will last. hopefully its built well and I will just have to remind my self to blow it out at the end of the day. I am not a welder, but I can imagine things like hood weight would be a big consideration for someone who is and the lincoln noticeably heavier, but thats because the flip up part.
I do find the blue light much easier to look through though and its much clearer. There also isnt this blinding feeling when you first start welding. But my speedglass is older so maybe 3M tech has gotten better.

up until the last job i was on, i was one step above the hoods you used to hold with one hand. a none auto hood trying to arc weld on scaffolding in dark environment. made for interesting starts every time you tried to shake your head to bring the hood down while keeping the stick in the right place. This last time I brought my personal hood as I had a feeling I was going to need it. just makes work much easier when you have the right tools.

Thats a real difference! Im leery of breaking the flip up aspect..but that'll never happen. Im pretty careful with my hood. I wear safety glasses under my hood these days because too many things fly into my eyes.. I have the 3M speedglas and its about 10 years old.. Looks just like your picture, not super clear like the Lincoln. When I got it I was using a harbor fight one and the 3m speedglas was so much amazingly better.
