I am very happy with the results. Since installing the new chip and crank sensor I have been driving the jeep almost daily. I have only had one issue. I am not sure what caused it but the fuel pump lost its prime from the rear tank. No biggie.... I switched to the front tank, which gravity feeds, and fired the jeep up. After running for a minute I switched back to the rear tank and everything has been fine since.

    Just a small update.
We got home last week from the forum Rubicon run.
The only note I have is the initial startup at 7,700' elevation. I live at 500' elevation and trailered the jeep up to 7,700' where I fired it up from cold. I had to set the hand throttle up just a little bit to get it to idle decent until the thermostat opened. After a couple key cycles, (drive to get lunch, drive to gas station) the jeep began to run just as well as it did in the valley.
I think that the ECM was a bit shocked by the sudden elevation change upon startup and needed to get into closed loop to make a program adjustment.
3 hard days of wheeling and never a hiccup out of the TBI! I only used 10.5 gal of gas from Meyers, Ca... out to Loon Lake..... through the Rubicon and back on the trailer at Barker Pass.

Small update…. The throttle body injector noise and whistle was a bit annoying at crawl speeds. I picked up a stock air cleaner housing at pick n pull yesterday. 1990 s10 blazer with 4.3 v6. Quieted things down quite a bit. I have some more plans for this, but I’m happy so far!

Kyle, you may be able to eliminate some of that noise or whistle by making a slight throttle screw adjustment either in or out and then doing another IAC relearn. I don't know what you IAC count is at idle but there is usually some room for slight adjustments and the ECM will correct the engine speed to the programed idle speed. The whistle is coming from the air passing through the plates.

I was running an open element before. I Doubt there were any noticeable HP gains from it.

I am going to try that again, in the past every time I attempted to do that I ended up with too high of idle. Hopefully now that the system is operating properly I will have different results.
I have to say.....The system is working so well now I hate to mess with it.

You might try doing the changes incrementally. For example, make a small idle speed adjustment (note how much you change the screw position) without doing the IAC relearn. Note the changes in the engine operation. Did the noise change for example. If things have improved don't do anything else. Over time using the jeep, the IAC will itself do a relearn if the parameters of operation call for it. If you don't like the set screw change, just return it to it's original set point.

Finally got around to topping off the S-10 air cleaner housing. Now it looks like it was meant to be!

Great thread! Thanks for all the info. I tried to install the Howell system on my 77' CJ5 with 304 V8 and had the same idle issues. I also talked to Troy and he gave me some ideas and also another chip. Fiddled with it for a month and finally gave up and put the Motorcraft back on. So now I'm building a Dauntless to swap into a 57 Willys PU. I was going to try the Howel system on it. I talked to Troy to see what I needed to make the V8 system work with the V6. Basically, a chip and fuel injectors. He did recommend a crank sensor. But after reading this, if I get the Howell oddfire chip will it have the Howell program (which doesn't seem to work well) or the Prevatt program?

Looks like the same air cleaner I have. My top cap is different. I like it.

If you decide to install the Howell system on a dauntless you will need the crank sensor if you want it to idle nice and smooth. It will never idle consistently at 600-700 rpm without it.
I would also remove Howell's tach filter from the harness and wire solder the tach feed line back together.
You will need to see what size injectors are in the throttle body provided by Howell. I would imagine that they supplied Chevy 305 injectors to fuel your AMC 304. You will need 4.3 v6 sized injectors for the dauntless, they are easy to source and change.
I would not bother with any of Howells chips. I can send you a copy of the Prevatt tune. I had Troy set my idle in the chip to 600. You may want more if you are running multiple engine accessories.
    Feel free to ask questions.

Thanks for the updates Norcal. I'm still on the fence on weather I want to try it again on the Oddfire. I got frustrated with it trying to make it work on my 304 V8. So it's not just an Oddfire problem. I don't why Howell doesn't just supply the crank sensor and a bracket with the basic kit. Pretty clear that it needs one to make it run correctly.

If you decide to pass on installing it, and your kit is still fairly clean, I might be interested in purchasing it from you.

OK, I'll let you know. Never got it out of the garage, so zero miles.

I have Howell system on my Dauntless and it's running too rich. I'm in process of installing crank sensor. Kyle, could you send me Randy Prevatt's tune?

Well @Norcal69 or Kyle, how I spent my Sunday? Reading 19 pages of Howell terror. Lol
So my new to me '79 CJ5 with a 304 has a Howell kit circa 1999 I think. The previous owner went thru three chips from Troy until Troy advised turning up the fuel pressure. I think the pressure is currently 15 psi. Engine idles too high for my tastes at 1000 rpm.

I mention all this because these issues probably seem all too familiar to you. Unlike @Ollie2009 the TBI does run quite well. I'm impressed. Very much looking forward to wheeling this rig and experiencing the same off road joys of EFI that Kyle is enjoying.

Private message me your Email and I will forward the tune to you.
I would not do anything to the tune until you get the crank sensor installed.
What is your current fuel pressure?
