    Sorry for your motor.

Did the instructions from the previous owner match what is generally accepted here:
    Flat Towing Guide

I don't normally pull the rear drive shaft myself but if you have anything in the jeep when flat towing you should pull the drive shaft.

I leave the transmission in high and transfercase in neutral and 2wd

    Something was in gear.

I haven't flat towed a Jeep in over 30 years but used to tow one up to our hunting camp which is a 100 mile drive. The old Jeep I had then did not have locking hubs, so I always removed both driveshafts, and taped the bearing caps so they wouldn't fall off.

If you end up buying a used engine be aware that engines out of 1982 up Buicks have computer controlled distributors and carburetors which have to be replaced by earlier versions.

That is a very nice looking Jeep, sorry for your mishap.

That's strange that the engine was connected to the wheels. Maybe gearbox and transfer box can be damaged too.
If the Jeep is in neutral it is not dangerous in my mind. maybe by mistake the gear lever was pushed.
I understand that if all is deconnected from the wheels, it becomes a trailer.
There is also a limit to the speed.

Yes sir, I towed it the exact same way the seller instructed. The first trip up was 95 miles and without incident. The trip where the failure happened was 20 miles from where I started. I will use a trailer from now on for sure.

So after some more digging it looks like I have a 4.1 V6 with a 500 CFM Edelbrock Carb and fuel pump connected to a GM 465 4 speed transmission, Dana 18 Transfer Case with a Warn Overdrive. I assume that based on that info, any 1980-1984 4.1 work work?

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

From your pic of engine it looks like a even fire 231 V6 to me. Very nice jeep. Love your log structure.

The 4.1 is a somewhat rare larger bore 231 produced from 1980-1984. Buick V6 engine - Wikipedia

You might have better luck finding a 231 to replace it. They are externally interchangeable.

What a drag. So you never did get to drive it?
So somehow the engine was spinning when being towed, and it threw a rod, (or two) by the sounds of it. Transfer case still engaged, and tranny in gear. Must have been in a lower gear, and it over-revved it?

S&J are awesome. I got a long block for my Dodge Ram. Outstanding workmanship. I heartily
    recommend them.

I got to drive it down the driveway to my truck after I could bend my knee enough to get in to it. I'm thinking it must have over-revved like you say. Definitely an expensive lesson to learn.
