Yep, I’m back with questions. I’ve got a rotating squeak coming from the passenger side (pretty sure).

First thought was u-joints…. Replaced them but still have the squeak. Can’t tell if it’s front or rear.

    Wheel bearings? Brake adjustment?

    Look forward to your thoughts.

As always, thanks for your input!

Glamor shot of my cleaned and painted driveshaft! I saw somebody on here that had their drivetrain painted Caterpillar yellow and It made me wiggly, so an un-ashamed rip off!

My first thought would be the parking brake on the back of the transfer case if you still have it. Or just a drum brake dragging on the passenger side.

I don't know the volume of your squeak & it may not even be close to your problem , but I've had a speedometer cable emit a pretty notable rotating squeak. Simple to disconnect at the lower end.

How many squeaks per tire rotation?

The parking brake is just an empty drum. The working parking brake is a wheel chock that lives in the back of the truck!

New Speedo cable, but I’ll try to find a cap to test this.

I haven’t had her up in the air yet, but it does sound like 1 to 1 tire rev to squeak.

Possibly a dry wheel bearing, or one going bad? Is it better/worse depending on the direction in which you are cornering?

I haven’t noticed better or worse any time except going slow with a fence or building on the right to reflect the sound.
Normal travel, I can’t hear it at all but engine/tranny noise and the wind, I don’t hear much anyway.

I had that same noise on my 67 CJ6. I stumbled across what was causing it reading something else here on the forum. The sad news is that I don't remember what it was. Following.

You can try putting it up on 4 jack stands, running it in gear in 4wd and walking around while listening, but chances are, if it’s a wheel bearing it will need the weight of the vehicle to make the squeak.

Do you have a friend or significant other who could drive it slowly while you walk around it? Pinpoint it to one corner, and you’ll at least have a starting point. If it’s 1:1 ratio, and you can corner it, there’s only so many things it could be.

    Here is what I found.

What Types Of Gear Oil Used In 1967 Cj-5?

I read this as I had a 67. I had a creaking and the limited slip friction modifier additive fixed it. I only heard it cornering at low speeds in the alley where there were wooden fences on both sides reflecting the sound back at me.

You might also check the torque on your lug nuts.

Made zero progress on this over the last weekend. Busy at work and then busy holiday weekend.

I did however score a nice 3 legged dog bone puller from craigslist. At least it is on hand if it is needed for the repair.

We’ll see what happens this week …

Got her rear end up in the air, passenger side definitely has a “drag”, drivers side clear.
Stripped down to the axles and same thing.
Anybody got a method for removing axles?
I don’t have a slide hammer and my 3 legged puller is too big.
I have a 2 jaw puller, but I was worried about pulling against the tube flange.
Also, the seal on the pass side just fell off in my hand, driver side still solid, if that means anything…

As usual, looking forward to your help!

It often works for me to put the hub back on the axle, tighten the nut a few threads so there is still slop, and use the hub itself as a slide hammer.

I read that before, I was hoping someone would back it up.
I should have been more clear in my description. The pass side has about 2/3 free rotation, 1/3 drag in each revolution.

I assume you mean the hub seal, there is an inner seal in the axle tube behind the bearing. You need to replace both seals, the bearing, and gaskets. there are probably some shims behind the retainer, and those need to cleaned and put back in exactly as found.

The bearing will sometimes come right out using the hub as described, but more often will require a slide hammer. If you don't have one, and can't make one, you can probably borrow or rent one from a parts store or garage. I made mine many years ago it has a flange that mounts to the wheel studs. I pull the hub and remove the key, then replace the hub with the nut only slightly snugged up, then bolt the slide hammer flange to the hub.

My slide hammer is pretty heavy and will usually pull the axle with just a few whacks, but the axles on my CJ5 were very difficult to pull and on one side I had to heat the flange with a torch, and get it started by a few hits on the other axle with a small sledge hammer before it would free up. I mention this because it may seem like the thing won't budge, but if you try tapping on the opposite axle just be sure you do not hit the end of the axle or you will damage the threads. I use a piece of 2" pipe over the end to prevent that.

The inner seal can sometimes be difficult to remove as well. If it won't come out with a seal puller I cut through it with a small chisel then it will come on out with the seal puller. They make special tools for tapping in the new seal, but I have always just used a socket about the same size as the seal collar to drive them in.

Since this sounds like your first trip down this road, I advise you read the service manual, watch videos, whatever it takes to understand how to properly re-install the hubs. Never put the key in the slot and then slide hub on over it. If you do that the hub will push the key ahead of it and the key will ramp up in the slot acting like a wedge and will split the hub when it is torqued. The hub goes on first, the keyway is lined up, and the key is then tapped in with a small hammer and brass drift.

And when you get the axle squared away, put a washer on that passenger side lower shock mount please!

    Thanks Oldpappy.
I have marked this thread because I thought it was easily understood and helpful to me. Front Wheel Bearing Preload - Do It Right!
I think it may need more than a washer lol.
My next thread will be asking about shock advice!

It is the rear wheel bearing preload that many get wrong.
