    AA9D3EDB-A968-4309-A6B5-0FE8C0366144.jpeg Hello everybody!
Got my gaskets and seals so I can start reassembly on my clutch replacement.
Started on the front seal for the T14 and look what I found....

Which gear is this (broken teeth)? Will it ride ‘till next winter? My tentative plan was to take an auto shop class at my local CC this winter with the express intent of rebuild the trans and tc. Hopefully this doesn’t change that plan.

    Thanks,
    Andy

Oh ahh that's a good one.
It needs to be cleaned out at the least.

Go ahead and save the course money and buy jeep parts plenty of info out there to diy.

Bad second speed gear and it could go completely out at any time yet it may last a little while if you flush out / refill then baby second gear.
That said when it does go it will likely wipe out the much more expensive countershaft gear.
If I was you, I would certainly tackle it now while your in there anyway.
You can learn everything yon need to know about a full rebuild in a couple weeks.

At the very least, go fishing with a magnet to find that piece of broken tooth. If your very lucky, it hasn't taken out any other gears, yet! Hopefully, you will only find one broken piece. If you do, keep fishing to see if there are more pieces. There likely are more than one broken piece.

Edit; looking closer, it looks like at least 2 broken teeth. There's likely more.

Time for full disassembly and inspection of all gear teeth including the lower counter shaft gears....if you are lucky, you will just need to replace 2nd gear....I had never rebuild anything like this when I pulled the T14/D18 for the first time 5-6 years ago...you can do it...a few new tools to your collection will help, but mostly doable with standard hand tools.

Well, not the answer I was hoping for, but I can’t say I didn’t expect it.

She’s been down for a month, I’ll just add another.

Any favorite kit suppliers? Looks like Novak is “indefinitely back ordering” T-14,15 kits.

    Thanks all for your replies!

I haven't used one but Herm has those kits. I think I would wait until I had it tore down before ordering anything. If the countershaft is screwed up, it may be more cost effective to just find a complete usable used transmission.

Novak, or Herm. Transfercase kits | Herm The Overdrive Guy
    Or maybe Parts Mike.

I suspect that Novak would be selling the Crown or Omix kit. I know there is no domestic source for some of the bearings now, with few options other than the Crown part. Typically your rebuild kit comes with the two big bearings, seals and gaskets, blocking rings, and a so-called "small parts kit" of roller bearings and bushings and such.

I think Novak's reputation in this area comes from their hardened Dana 18 intermediate shafts. Likely they are reselling the same stuff for everything else you can get from Quadratec. Quadratec is the nation's largest dealer of Crown parts.

Supposedly Herm did some R&D to assemble his kits from selected parts that have better specs. If you can get him on the phone, he likes to talk Jeeps - so I hear.

Look on Quadratec and see if they are selling a Crown kit, either a rebuild kit, a small parts kit, or seals and gaskets.

Well, it’s all torn down, case is at the shop getting a solvent bath and $ are on their way to Herm.

I’ve been through the FSM about 2 zillion times in the last few days and have only come up with one question for now.
How does the front of the counter shaft seal? Is the fit tight enough as is or do I need to smear a bit of RTV in the front end of the case?

Looking forward to parts, This is going to be fun!

I'm not sure but I think it is "smear RTV in the front end of the case" and everywhere else, to help the original, low tech seals keep the lube where it's
    supposed to be.

I actually did use the “smear” method.
No leaks yet after a couple of weeks.
Still have a couple of small leaks in the TC, but that’s another story…

Well I'm sorry your thread went dead in the time between then and now.

The "horrible greasy mess" on the underside of these old Jeeps is something of concern to everyone, especially after an overhaul and then it happens again. :worry:

Now that everything’s cleaned and painted, the TC leaks are no big deal. Once a week with a paper towel and they are clean. Really only “weeps”.

Honestly, the T14 was so much fun to rebuild (and I was so scared of it), that
I’m looking forward to rebuilding the TC hopefully this winter.
