well I knew this day would come...
something else to chase down with no apparent cause..

My CJ6 is giving me an odd noise over 20/25 mph...
its sounds rotational if that makes sense to anybody, increasing in frequency with speed.

almost sounds like a bearing chirping, Im fairly certain its coming from the drivietrain (T18 D300)

    trucks running great..
Ive topped off the oil levels
did a full nut and bolt on body mounts and cage and dash items
took shifter cover off (Ive had screw heads make odd noises before)
    greased all chassis and steering

ill try and post up a video.. just looking for some suggestions on what to check out..

How about when you coast out of gear?
Or when you push the clutch in?

Noise stays with coast and clutch in or out
But goes away under ~20 mph

Stationary, with Tcase in neutral and rowing through gears no noise...

    This. Driveshaft UJs.

Also, does it clunk when you move forward and reverse?

I had a similar noise that sounded like it was coming from a similar place, but it ended up being my speedometer was about to die - I think the sound was directing behind the dash and downward, so it sounded like it was coming from near the transmission.

eventually my speedometer needle started acting erratically at higher speeds, and then stopped working altogether.

to rule this out, you can quickly unscrew the cable from the back of the speedometer, take it for a spin and see if the sound goes away.

axle shafts are RCV.. they prob could use a grease
driveshafts are tight and well lubed

I was actually thinking this on the drive home from lunch..
the cable would put the noise in the right area and would change with speed..

Might shoot some grease in there and see what happens..

x3 on checking those u-joints. Look for rust stains near the cup seals even though the joints look good and seem to have no lost motion in them.

Speedo cable is a possibility, but a dry cable would probably give the needle some irregularity.

Being directly related to road speed, you might also give a thought to brakes or wheel bearing type stuff. Including the e-brake.

I would bet that it's the intermediate gear needle bearings in the transfer case. Changing the gear lube could help, but , if that's what it is, it would have to get fixed eventually. My own is going to get the taper roller bearing conversion.

ok, U joints will absolutely be checked, but I'm not betting too hard here.

I would normally look directly to the wheel end for something like this, my ears just tell me its not coming from there, but my wife says I don't listen or hear well.. maybe I should hang her out the truck while I drive it..

speedo cable isn't super smooth, but it isn't wonky either.. good call, still worth a shot or grease at each end.

So, I ran a Tcase without any gear oil once.. it was a sound I will never forget. I also heard it very clearly coming from the Tcase.
I do plan on draining the tranny and case to see if anything is off. I probablly have >8K miles on this truck since I built it, the whole drivetrain was rebuilt. This "should" be the last thing on the list.. but its there now..

Do you have a double cardan CV driveshaft?
Those tend to squeak when dirt gets in the centering ball
