The bench is as clean as it gets :bananatool::

But since an empty bench abhors a vacuum and will collapse into anti-matter, I decided to spread out the future drivetrain and take inventory:

Starting from the engine. Standard BOP Bellhousing that still needs a cleaning:

Next is a T18 bearing retainer turned down to fit the bellhousing, allen bolts, and the right pilot bushing for Ford to Buick (from Novak):

Then a 1980 Ford 2wd T18 that still needs to be cleaned and disassembled:

A rebuild kit for the T18 (from Novak):

And a T18 to large hole Dana 18, 6 spline adapter (also from Novak). Really nice looking stuff:

    Large hole Dana 18 (clean!):

Twin stick conversion from an older D18. The interlock stays out:

Large yoke for the front of the transfer case to upgrade from the tiny V6 joints:

    Empty parking brake:

    Parking brake rebuild kit:

Dana 18 rebuild kit (from Novak):

Original Warn overdrive with a rusty bowl gear but otherwise in good shape (that needs cleaned ):

New bowl gear and rebuild kit for the Warn overdrive (from Advance Adapters):

And last but not least, a 29 tooth, 6 spline input gear if I don't want to run the overdrive for some reason (from ebay):

So what actual work did I do on the Jeep toniight? I pulled the single lever shift rod out of the transfer case:

....and that's it. I'll do the springs this weekend and start putting the transfer case together before I tear into the transmission and overdrive.

I'm still waiting on one motor mount. :steamed:

Yes, as I understand it they are mostly compatible if you swap to the right pulley. The pressure relief valve can vary by vehicle and rack vs gearbox steering gear.

I had a guy walk up to my jeep and lick it one day. I wonder if he found the taste sweet or not. Maybe I should have asked him?

Thanks. I built it in the shop at the last house and liked it so much I pulled it out before listing. They can build their own bench!

There it is on the trailer (to the right) after we brought it up here:

Good Lord. This picture reminds me what a dump this place was when we bought it. Now that things are sort of under control 3 years later, I can wholeheartedly say I will never buy another abandoned farm house with the intent of living in it. I'm getting too old for this :poo:.

    Itlksez,

The previous owner put radial tires on the jeep is preparation for selling it. They are passenger car tires: 235 x 75R15. After I put the BDS 2.5" lift springs on the jeep, I took it to a local shop to have it aligned. All they adjust was the toe-in. When I got it back, it wandered all over the road. I had them readjust and it tracks pretty nice now. I have ordered a set of Coker STA Traxion 7.oo x 15 bias ply tires. I am anxious to see how it will handle with the new tires.

I think I would have bought that place too. It's a beautiful farm in beautiful countryside.

Didn't really work on the Jeep at all today, but did give it a wash job:

Then Emmett and I went for another test drive around the neighborhood with no issues:

For and even better test, we put it in 4-low and crept up our 300ft hill in 1st gear:

The temperature stayed pegged at the 190 thermostat temp the entire time. With the old fan/radiator it would have easily been up to 215 degrees:

The view up top. You can see the farmers starting to work the fields in the distance. Emmett got to run back down:

I had to go in to work today to help the previous group I worked for. They had a file server crash and were having a hard time getting the secondary file server online. Since the weather was nice and the Jeep seems to be running well, I drove it to town. I solved the file server problems, returned some library books, took some pictures for the scavenger hunt thread (Photo Scavenger Hunt), got the mail, got some gas, and made it home with no issues. It was a little over an hour of driving. I'm very happy with the cooling mods. The gauge heats up to 190 and stays there.

I do need to adjust the idle speed up a bit.

After dinner I finally had some to work on the Jeep and motor mounts are next.

I ordered a set of Crown mounts like I have in the '69 and a set of Anchor mounts for a mid 70's Buick. The Crown mounts are made in India, but the quality looks OK. One of the Anchor mounts was made in the USA and the other in South Korea. I choose to use the Anchor mounts because they have additional safety catches for engine retention in the event of mount failure. Crown in back, Anchor in front:

This is always such a pain with the engine in the vehicle. Used a floor jack and a 2x4 to lift the engine by the oil pan rail. Left mount out (You can see where the steering shaft rubs on the torched out holes in the motor mount. It will get fixed when I swap the steering column):

To get the left mount it back in, I needed to pull the engine forward about 1/4". I tried it with a puny ratchet strap and could only get 1/8" movment:

So out came the 2" web, 3333 lb hay hauling ratchet strap. That did the trick:

Emmett was helping me the whole time:

    Left mount in place:

    And right mount in place:

The old mounts are perhaps past their freshness date. Both mounts were in two pieces :

If I was a smart person, I would have changed the motor mounts before making a custom fit fan shroud. But I'm not and the motor moved 3/8" up and 1/2 inch to the right. The shroud only clears by 1/2" on the upper right corner:

That's too close for comfort, so I need to do some trimming. Amazingly, if you jack up the grill to get to the lower bolts, you can pull the shroud out without draining the radiator and pulling the grill:

    Tomorrow night's trimming project:

There’s always more isn’t there? I want to start on my 3B but now I broke the parking brake cable on the 5.

I have had good luck with the Crown mounts. What a pain to do by yourself, though. I'm sure Emmett was a big help. Now, if he could just slide that bolt in while you jack it up 1/16".
