Steve's jeep has the stock 7 blade on it. We installed a 2 row champion radiator and factory shroud. He could probably cover half his radiator with cardboard in July.

I'll bet. Mine does well with a 4-blade and that setup. I did just find a 5-blade on ebay and ordered it for the V6 jeep.

Parts showed up today so I was all excited.

First I installed the -4 AN oil pressure gauge line. It seems like a much better solution than plastic or copper tubing.

The kit from Summit. This one is 5ft long and was the perfect length:

Routed behind the alternator and along the intake manifold:

And into the back of the guage. Ignore the household wire nut and disconnected speedometer. Those projects are on the list:

Then it was on to swapping the aluminum power steering fittings for steel. The new steel ones:

All went well at the steering gear but those fittings weren't leaking. When I inspected the pump after removing the aluminum fitting I found out it's a 1980+ o-ring fitting type pump. No inverted flair in the hole:

My fittings need something like this:

I went back and looked at the old pressure hose. It's an inverted flair hose, but you can see how the PO tightened it enough that the end of the pipe was smashed flat and creating a seal:

So that is disappointing. It wasn't the fault of the aluminum fitting. It was my fault for not checking and ordering the right fitting. Since the steering gear, engine, power steering hoses, and power steering pump brackets were all pre-1980 I figured the pump was too. My guess is someone swapped the pump with a newer style back when the engine was in the Buick and reefed on the hose to make it work. They may not have even known they did it.

So I need a different adapter. You can either get an o-ring style adapter like the ones above or you can get an inverted flare insert to convert the pump to the older style fitting. I can't source either locally but ordered both adapters online and should have them on Monday. I guess I'll look into installing the BDS springs this weekend since it still won't be running.

    Finally some goodies showed up!

An O-ring to -6 AN adapter and inverted flare inserts. I ordered both to have two chances of making this work before waiting for shipping again:

I wasn't sure if I'd have to pull the pump to tap in an insert so I avoided it and used the O-ring adapter. It worked great. No leaks! :bananatool: I pulled the Jeep outside to warm it up and burp the coolant:

Then Emmett and I headed out for a sunset test drive:

We did an eight mile loop with a couple decent hills. The heater works! Full throttle, lugging, whatever, the temp never rose above the 190 degree thermostat.

I let Emmett run up the driveway with me idling behind him in 2nd gear at 8mph. This has always been the worst case for the Jeep to heat up. It still never got above 190. Of course it's 38 degrees out so it's not conclusive for hot weather but it already seems much better.

On my drive, I noticed I only had one low beam light. Upon investigation despite clearly labeling the wires, I put one on the wrong terminal when the grill went back on. I fixed that and .... had no low beams.

Turns out someone did this lovely low-beam wire repair at the dimmer switch. The wire was just wrapped around the terminal under some poorly wrapped electrical tape:

One heat-shrink crimp connector later and the lights are all working as they should:

    Next steps:
    • I need to do a big shop cleanup tomorrow night so I have space to work on the transmission and transfer case. I have the adapter and rebuild kits sitting on the shelf.
    • I have one motor mount and the second is supposed to show up tomorrow. Those are the next priority item.
    • Then it's on to the BDS springs. Some 6 degree caster shims are supposed to show up tomorrow for that project.

Thank you for the interest and will keep you in mind. Right now I am keeping it for my spare NOS Dauntless.

Yep, you all read that correctly. I have a NOS dauntless that I scored last year still in the box :p

Sorry for the small hi-jack Roy.

    Fireball,

I would like to know more about the 6 degree caster shims that you ordered for your future leaf spring swap. I have a 1965 CJ5 with and F134, t90 and D18. A few months ago I purchased new BDS 2.5" lift springs and installed them. I am concerned that my driveshaft/pinion angles are a little extreme and my steering tie rods are no longer parallel. How did you decide on 6 degree caster shims and where did you purchase them?

I use the caster shims for steering stability at the detriment of front U-joint angle. For good straight line stability you want 5-6 degrees of caster. My other Jeep that had 2.5" ProComp springs when I got it, the caster was exactly 0 and it was all over the road. I went with 6 degree shims on it. You can see the post in the build thread here:
It ended up with a front driveline U-joint misalignment of almost 9 degrees (Old Red Maintenance Thread), but I haven't noticed any issues with it even driving at higher speeds in 4wd with snow on the roads. The shims completely transformed the Jeep. It used to be a white-knuckle ride at 25 mph and now it tracks straight and true at 55.

Getting 6 degree shims for the BDS springs was just a guess. I wanted to have them before I put the springs on, but can't measure until I do. Long term I want 33s and most members with that combo are running one inch longer shackles. These will help get some caster back if I need to do that. If they are too much, I'll order another set with the right angle.

There are 2 good sources for shims I know of:
I ended up with Warrior Products ones on the '69 because Mcruff was overloaded at the time. I got them again this time because I forgot I wanted some until last week and Amazon had the Warrior Products ones with 4 day shipping. Everybody who has gotten them from Mcruff has been very happy with them.

To follow up, the *right* way to fix things is to cut off the spring pads and the inner knuckles, set your pinon angle and weld the spring pads back on, then rotate the inner knuckles to get the proper caster and weld them back on. I'm not really capable of that so I put up with shims and poor u-joint angles for better drivability.
