i would like to know 1)what kind of winch to get, and 2) whether it is possible to mount said winch above the bumper? I would like a crankstart, but a winch would get in the way. Thank you in advance for info

Personally, I would always opt for a PTO winch.

Welcome to this forum!!! There are many choices for an above the bumper electric winch, most PTO winches need the room below the grill for the driveshaft, so they feed thru the bumper.
Looking for new or used winch? Budget? Mounting on your CJ5?

i dont mind wether it used or not, but am looking to spend about $300 and mount it on the 5. mostly, i need some method of mounting above the bumper, where the hole for the crankstart needs to be.

crank start is fun, until it kicks back, then not so fun.
sprains and broken wrists can result.

yeah, but apparently there is a technique to it? and the jaw of the crank is rounded so that it (in theory) will get kicked out when the engine starts

Winch mounts are avail alot of places, Badland winch from Harboe Fright is cheap and works good.

    Not necessarily.

My '56 has a Koenig PTO winch mounted mid-line behind the bumper. (The fairlead is in the bumper.)

There is room to pass the hand-crank through, above the winch plate and beneath the cable reel, just slipping under the bumper. Just need a guide at the front.

thank you for this advice. do you know if i could easily add a PTO? that seems like a reasonable option, but it requires a different T-case? also do they make this kinda stuff new, or will i have to look for it secondhand?

You need the PTO unit that bolts to the back of the existing transfer. Then a shaft with UJ's and support bearing. And a winch. The mount can be fabricated by welding.

Best to buy a used set-up complete. Parts of this are available as replacement repair parts from Herm The Overdrive Guy, but pricey. The shaft(s) can be generic parts..

Relatively simple, except setting it up with the correct alignments and very tight clearances takes patience and care.

What are your intended uses of the winch? Working on your land, utility type stuff? Occasional self recovery? No one will argue against a PTO winch being best for frequent use in a work setting. But if your budget is $300, and you just want something to pull you out of the mud here and there, there are lots of low profile, price point electric winches out there now you can mount above the bumper.
A mount can made/fabricated pretty easily or there are universal mounts to get you going. Potential complications will include: Saginaw power steering, your battery/alternator/electrical set-up, and limiting air flow through your radiator.
Just a few budget winches to look at in the 6k-8k range at are:
    -Smitybilt
    -SuperWinch
    -Badlands

Remember, intelligent use of rigging (blocks, directionals, etc) can increase your pull capacity or facilitate effective and efficient winching.

self recovery and possibly a small amount of work, as well as recovering other vehicles. i understand that pto is expensive, and electrical is easier to find and cheaper and whatnot, but really just dreaming

With a budget of 300 an newer electric winch is IMO your only option. A PTO winch complete will run you around a grand If you can find one. Koenig winches are designed to pull from the top or bottom. Koenig makes a high mount PTO winch that mounts above the bumper (model 100) and if you wind it to pull from the top the fairlead mounts on top of the bumper. That is actually the case with the c100 as well. If they pull from the bottom you have to install the fairlead in the bumper. I have never used a crank so I can't tell you if this would give you the room needed. I will check mine though.

PTO is the way to go again IMO and my advice is find a jeep with one complete remove it and sell the jeep for what you paid for it. That's mainly how I have acquired most of my collection of a dozen or so winches.

If so for that kind of money either it was a steal or it was in bad shape. A beat up winch itself goes for about that. a beat up shaft and a beat up PTO goes for 150 to 200 each. One in good shape will run 800 to 1200. I would expect the mount for that price as well.

My experience in this area is that a full setup can be had for about $600, total. Not including mount, which I prefer to make anyway. Unless prices went up a lot in the last year.

The other day I had a buddy come over to help cut down around 20 trees that were close to the house. He has an f150 with a winch, which we used to coax the trees into not falling on my house.

One thing I was really impressed with was that he could control the winch in or out with a key fob. We were talking about PTO winches and how it would have actually been harder to do what we were doing if we had been using a PTO winch on the jeep, since the operator needs to be in the drivers seat.

Even though we spent all day pulling on trees, we never came close to the duty cycle of the winch. Something to consider...

The ONE time I dropped a large tree onto a client's house, it was because I was relying on a winch ...which quit on me midway.

Winch is great for moving stuff a long way, but I'll never trust a winch alone again for a critical fall. Prefer heavy duty hand-powered come-alongs when a lot is at stake.

I absolutely agree with you. Only one tree that I dropped stressed me out, and only because it was 10 feet from the house and was a 21" pine. My options were to trust in my SKILZ or to use the winch and pray the line didn't break.

I wasn't really worried that the tree would go the wrong way, but I like using the winch to demand that it falls in the exact direction I want it to. Someday I'll build up more gear!
