There seems to be a lot of talk now and then about upgrading to better alternators. I am thinking of going to a 10si or12si delco have not seen any ones pic of bracket mods needed. I understand that with the delco alternators they are much larger than the old motorola alternator therefore have clearance problems with the oil filter and it's base. Any one have photos of their bracket mods? any comments or opinions?

I did mine. 75 CJ 304. I swapped in a Delco 130cs or sumpin like that. As I recall the only bracket that needed modding is the rod kinda thingy on top that goes to the block. I measured the old alt and the new then shortened the required amount and re-threaded the hole. Good thing I looked at this pic I just took. Noticed my alternator ground came off!

Thanks for the photo. I had not realized that the mounting bracket set up on my 74 was different from other intermediate years until I saw yours. Mine is a more complicated looking set up that would be much more difficult to alter. I will take some pic on Monday and post them. Thanks

I ran into this same issue as I upgraded to a larger alternator on my 304. You can either grind the case of the alternator a bit for clearance, or get a slightly longer belt and install a adjustment rod like I did. The benefit to this is that you get to use a wrench for getting the belt nice and tight. This is the adjustment rod I used: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-420302

This photo is slightly outdated as I now have a powermaster 140 amp CS130. But I’m still using the same adjusting rod setup.

i used hot rod parts its an aluminum bracket that bolts to the waterpump and the long bolt goes through the bracket the alternator and a spacer to the head. the bottom bolt on the alternator uses a turnbuckle set up as above. this raises the alternator up helping at the oil pump housing. AMC Alternator Bracket 304 360 401 V8 Passenger Side Jeep 1972+ | eBay it looks just like this one i bought it from a member here for way less than this [IMG]

I like the high mount option. But will stick with what I have. There was a time when I woulda done this. I believe BullTear also makes a bracket set up for the 304

Old Fogie, I just was looking at this diagram. Looks to me like the bracket 3.018-8 was replaced in my year with the rod I posted. From the looks of it you could make a rod that size and replace the brackets that were used. 3.018-08 and -10

    '75 is a one-year config, IIRC.

Zilla, you are absolutely correct my alternator mount is just like this pic. I looked it over today but could not get a photo, my camera failed me. I have a lead on a junked out 360 from a 75 j-10. It may have a setup on it like yours, will try to go check it out later this week. I might be able get a setup like your 75 and mix parts and fab something, I did pick up a dead 12si delco (5 bucks) at the pick and pull for a core and also to use to pattern my fab work. I will try to post pic when I get it worked out.

Yeah, I am starting to think my 74 has an oddball mount. If I remember correctly my brother had a 73 that looked like zilla's 75, But that has been several years.

I would guess that '72-74 V8 all have the same bracket type, as in the '74 drawing posted by zila. '76 changes and the configuration of the brackets remains the same through 1980. In '76 Jeep introduced the Motorcraft alternator replacing the earlier Motorolas. Jeep does not list an alternator brand for '75, but does show a service alternator that is different from the original Motorola. Maybe they wised up and dropped the Motorolas even as replacement parts.

The sixes got Delco 10SI alternators starting in 1976, and the V8s got 10SIs starting in 1978.

On mine I'm sure a PO changed the original out and put in a Delco. Not sure what model it is but it is a one wire with the self exciting field. I fits perfectly in the original mount
