We bought this truck with 200,000 miles on it and it lunched a lifter at 236,000. Didn't strand us though, was just making a funny noise. Put in a reman engine. Then the Turbo needed to be replaced. It's just shy of 300,000 miles now. We spent more on repairs in the first year than we did on the truck, but it's been great for many years now. We need to run it into the ground to get our money out of it at this point. Other than the traumatic 1st year, I sure love the thing.

Finding a V10 manual is going to take some patience but it will be a nice truck. The ZF 6-speed is a really nice transmission. I sure love ours.

Nothing really to report on updates. Put over 100 miles on the Jeep since it's been back together and it's running well. Went for another family drive and filled the tank one last time before the trip:

Didn't get to making the Jack mount, so the high-lift stays home. I've got a small jack in the toolbox I can change a tire with and I know buildflycrash has a high-lift with him.

Cleaning the filthy truck and packing now:

Here's my basic tool kit. Tire pump and plug kit will stay at the rental during the day trips since I have a spare. Some of the fluids will stay at the rental too.

This is kind of a cool thing for keeping the rain out of the Jeep when it's parked:

It came with the '71 and I hadn't pulled it out of the bag until today. I like it!

I need one of those! Does it have any labels? I’ve found a couple brands but none that are specifically for an early/intermediate CJ5.

I does have a label on the windshield area. It's all packed up now, but I'll get a picture of it this week and update the thread.

Did some triage tonight after the Colorado trip tonight. I already know I need a fuel pump and have it ordered.

Put the old jets back in and set the idle timing back to 6 degrees. Pumped the tires back up to 20psi.

The master cylinder has stopped leaking. I think the issue is the lid can interfere with the frame and steering gear and you need to be really careful putting it on.

Cleaned the duct tape residue (from my redneck fuel pump fix in Colorado) off the gas filler neck:

Inspected the motor mounts. All the transfer case mounts look good. The left motor mount looks like it's delaminated from engine side of the mount:

This might be the cause of my worsening clutch shudder in reverse. I've ordered a new set.

I also ordered some Nickel-Copper tubing to bend up some new fuel lines when I install the new fuel pump.

When I took the hardtop filler panels off the windshield, the hinge bolt threads weren't great but I didn't have time to do anything about it. Tonight, I ran a thread chaser through the holes and installed some new bolts with anti-sieze:

I know it’s redneck, but my go-to mod for those motor mounts has always been a few links of chain bolted between the block and frame on each side. It still allows the mounts to move, but keeps them under control. IMO, those mounts were designed to try to keep the potato-potato from transferring to the driver, but that made them too soft to be useful.

Redneck enough for Chevy to have their dealers do it in the early 70's: Motor Mount Mishap: How GM Pissed Off Nader (A Second Time)

That really is a good idea. I'll have to see if I can rig something up.

Every time I’ve done it, I was amazed at how it changed the entire feel of the Jeep. It just firms everything up.

New Delphi fuel pump showed up:

    Got it installed:

Went for a decent drive over the largest nearby hills with no issues. I *think* that problem is solved. Bodie was delighted to get back in the Jeep for another ride.

I have a second new pump to send to FinoCJ to replace the spare he gave me.

The new motor mounts showed up and I swapped them out tonight.

The rubber was completely detached from the anti-torqure portion of the old mounts. While the two main halves were still attached, there was significant tearing between the rubber and metal parts.

    New mounts installed. Right:

Left (next to the shiny new fuel pump):

The new mounts are Crown parts made in India. They seem.....OK. We'll see how they hold up.

Most importantly, the violent clutch shudder in reverse is gone! Success! :bananatool:

On a less successful note, I noticed this while I was under the hood:

I must have forgotten to tighten it during the radiator project. At least the alternator didn't fall off in the Colorado mountains. All tightened up now.

After all that work, the test engineers and I went for a drive around the property to see if the clutch worked on steep hills.

Strictly a run for science. No fun was had at all. Nope.

There isn't going to be a whole lot happening with the Jeep for a while since we're back working on the house again.

However, I slipped a couple things in tonight.

When I put the windshield down a few weeks ago, I ried to use the original tie-down strap disintegrated. I was using a generic strap until this showed up from Walck's. Fits great, looks just like the original:

I also ordered a footman loop set for the hood while I was at it. The original tall loop to hook to the windshield was missing when I got the Jeep. A victim of whatever beat the heck out of the hood. You can see where the loop got smashed into the hood:

    I hammered the holes flatter:

And installed the loop. Still 3 holes in the hood. The inner one seems to be a torn spotweld. The outer two used to have something in them at one time. I have no idea what:

I'm not super happy with the Repo loop. It's for a newer Jeep and is rubber coated. It does latch somewhat in the windshield catch, but the diameter is too big to fully latch with the rubber coating. It's also metric. I think I'll post a WTB in the forum classifieds for an original:

I also noticed both U-joints in the rear drive shaft have a little slop after the Colorado trip. I've got spares, so I'll do that one of the nights too.

Can't get enough of this thread.

I know its a bit late to ask these questions but your write-up on the caster shims was great. How did you come to use that degree shim? I've looked around and some say they are using up to 8 degrees but I heard 6 degrees is about the sweet spot. My '73 has 1.3-1.5 and I don't see 5 degree shims available. Would you suggest 4 or 6 after doing your front end?
