I wondered if you had enough room with the hardtop.

In my case, the carrier was showing it's age also. I used some 1" square tubing to rebuild it. I am glad I did as I like having my items organized and out of the way.

Took the Jeep for another long drive today and it's working great.

Changed the oil in the truck and started to work on the door buzzer issue. When the truck is sitting it will start doing the key-in door-open gong and wear out the battery. The door switches are attached to the latches inside the door so you have to pull the door panels to get to them. Changing both door switches made no difference so I started to tear apart the dash for wire troubleshooting at the body module. When I pushed on the instrument cluster, the gonging stopped! With some experimentation, I've narrowed it down to a problem with the instrument cluster board near that plug. If you push, it will gong. If you pull it stops.

A bad solder connection somewhwere around here:

I reflowed all the solder connections I dare, and it didn't fix it. Must be on the other side of board. $300.00 and a couple of weeks to send it off to get it fixed. Can't do that before the trip, so I wedged a piece of cardboard behind the connector and it seems fine for now.

Then it was time to pull the trailer into the shop and give it a once over:

It was about time to replace this:

3 out of 4 wheel bearings had some slop in them, so I'm glad I checked. All tightened and greased. Checked tire pressures and the trailer is ready to go.

The Jeeps had to sit outside while I worked on the other things:

Just need to pack up the tools and spares tomorrow and the vehicle prep for the trip is ready.

This is sorta off topic, so my apologies...
I was having a transmission issue in my car a few years ago, and I pinpointed it to a bad connection in the instrument cluster. When I swapped it out, I found this Easter egg printed on the board.

And a side note, that trailer looks plenty long enough for two jeeps.... :sneak:

Too cool! Any idea of the significance of the moose? I'm assuming that's what they are.

It's 18ft and I think I could fit two Jeeps if I made a hard stop at the front so the the tires can be right at the end of the bed:

The bumper of the second Jeep would need to fit under the tire rack of the first Jeep. I wish I had ordered the trailer 2ft longer. 18ft seemed like plenty at the time.

Got all the tools/spares packed into a new DeWalt waterproof toolbox. For now, I'm just strapping it and my lunch to the tailgate:

I have a waterproof duffel for clothing layers, towels, and rain gear that will go in the passenger footwell. Someday I'll have time to make cool racks like FinoCJ and Norcal69.

Went for a family drive again and everything is working well. Then took it out in the bumpy *** hayed pastures to see if I could shake anything loose. No issues!

For fun I did a redneck ramp test. This is as far as it gets before spinning the right ftont/left rear:

Not bad. You can see why these flexy old jeeps get around so well with open diffs.

The Jeep is looking great! It's amazing how much difference all the little maintenance items make if you drive it on a regular basis. It's easy to get used to heavy clutch, or flighty steering. A little work, like adding the shims, and it can transform whether they get used on a regular basis, or only come out of the garage for special occasions.

I had mounted a hi-lift to the front bumper on my FJ-40 years ago, like you had shown. It worked fine. I used set of their mounts. You could also mount it to the rear roll bar with a couple of 1 3/4" U-bolts from Home Depot or a farm supply store.

I really like that shovel mount! I might have to consider something similar on my Jeep

It was there when I got the Jeep. Since it matches the tire rack so well, I think it might be the same brand, but nobody else here has seen a similar one. The front part was missing because it interferes with the hardtop door. I'm using a cargo strap anchor for the moment. More detail in this old thread: Vintage Shovel Mount

I just read that your super duty is a 2006. I had a 2005 with the 6.0, but an automatic. I let it go after spending $12k in maintaining it over the 2 years I owned it. Every time I threw another $3k at it, I would say, "NOW it's going to be good foreeeever."

I absolutely loved the styling of that truck, and I honestly loved the 6.0 when it ran right (but if I'm honest it never left me stranded, but I like to think that I did good by noticing oil in the coolant, etc.) I never towed anything, so have been scouring the internet for the past year + for a 2005-2007 f250 or f350 lariat with the v10 and a manual. Not an easy find for sure. Maybe someday.
