    Anybody tell me what this 2 hole , welded on bracket is for ? My TSM doesn't show anything . It's a '75 Dana 30 .

    Built over? Um, yes.

    OEM for a '56 ws a dropped draft bar much like a tractor, and an extended plate for a trailer ball. No bumper.

    (M38A1 had "bumperettes" such the newer YJ's etc mimicked.)

    There were "factory authorized Special Equipment" step bumpers as I recal.
    Yes, that's a factory option called a "draw bar" on the option list. Sometimes that gets called a bumper. There were factory step bumpers for the rear of CJs ("factory approved Special Equipment"). The more modern ones I've seen were white stamped steel, not diamond plate. There may have been diamond plate ones in the early years.

    There is a rear cross-member, also seen in your pic from underneath, that some mistakenly call a bumper. The angle-iron thingie is likely a draw bar.

    Nothing like that from the factory that I've seen. There should be a rectangular rubber bumper on the frame above that part of the tube. Jeep PN 945577. Maybe it had some other kind of bumper there? The V8 CJs also had one or two 1/2" thick steel plates there on the frame to keep the front axle housing from smacking the oil pump cover.

    What's the diagonal bar used to keep the axle centered on coil sprung live axle vehicles called? Could be some idea like that.

    ITLKSEZ beat me to it, but my guess is a mount for a steering stabilizer shock thingy....maybe not OEM, but added at some point?

    That’s why it wasn’t my second thought. :D They’re usually not on the passenger’s side because they’d hit the diff cover.

    In tearing apart my D44 (66 CJ5) one of these (Driver side only) came out between the axle and wheel hub.

    The parts from the diagram on KW don’t show anything similar, the new seals seal around the hub not the axle. I searched the part # and found this old thread but the pictures don’t work:

    Rear axle outer oil seal

    anyone tell me what this seal is, and more importantly should I go to the trouble to track down two of them for rebuild?

    I think it's number 35 on this diagram: Dana 41 Rear Axle - View 2

    It's for keeping the bearing grease out of the brakes or maybe keeping brake dust out of the bearing.

    No, I ordered #35 from KW for the rebuild and the hole of the new seal from them is the diameter of the hub, whereas the hole in this old (original?) seal is the diameter of the axle shaft.

    Interesting. It's been a long time, but I seem to recalled the Dana 41 axles in my CJ2A having the smaller diameter seal that runs on the axle. Maybe it was a running change somewhere along the way? Others will know better than I.

    Another thought... Is there a similar or peculiar mount up near the shackles or frame on that side? The tie rod and drag link are most likely in the way, but I’m wondering if it was part of some sort of traction bar setup.

    I always have thought they were just a different style of wheel seal....I have used them and had no issues. Avaiible form Rock auto
