Everything I’m reading about T18s and T98s is saying that the cases are the same, but the internals are different. Is this true for only Jeep T18s vs. Jeep T98s? Or across brands also (i.e., Ford)? For instance, are the front bearing bores the same in both cases? And would the Ford T98 bearing retainer bolt up to the Jeep T18?

I’m researching a possible swap that got more difficult yesterday when I scraped the crud off of my truck’s transmission and saw “T98” when I was expecting “T18”.

My plan is to put the Ford V8 in front of the Jeep T18. I’m hoping it’s as easy as swapping out the Jeep T18 input shaft for a Ford T18 piece and bringing over the Ford T98 bearing retainer.

If it matters, both transmissions have reverse over/up.

Certainly not all cases are the same but most can be interchanged from one manufacturer to another.
Many small case variations are out there especially between different manufacturers.

Yes I do believe that all T18 and T98 front bearing retainers can be interchanged.
Yes Ford and Jeep can certainly swap bearing retainers.

The biggest concern with bearing retainers is sealed vs spiral grooving used for lubricant control.
I believe that all T98's used spiral grooved bearing retainers of various I.D.'s.

Your biggest concern is that the Ford T98 maindrive gear will not mate up to the Jeep mainshaft.

Thanks oldtime. I’d source a Ford T18 maindrive.

Ford uses a larger diameter synchronizer ring than Jeep does. So no go on that.

I'd suggest using any common Ford T18 case because it would fit the Ford bellhousing without mods.
Modify the rear Ford T18 bolt pattern to accept the Jeep rear adapter plate.
And use the Jeep 6 spline mainshaft inside the otherwise Ford T18.
Use the standard Ford T18 MDG. Which is 1-116" diameter.

So its all Ford excepting the modified case and the Jeep mainshaft and Jeep adapter plate....

I did this when I put the T-18 into my 5. Less the mods to mount it to a 225.

So here's the issue with that. The Ford V8 I have is '64 292 Y-block. From what I'm reading, the Y-blocks used a different bell pattern, and I'm also finding hints that the Y-block bell had a wider bearing retainer bore than the later t-18s. Not positive, just relaying what I'm finding on Ford forums.

This swap originally appealed to me because, 1) I have it, and 2) I love the fact that it would be a period correct swap. A '64 engine in a '62 Jeep. But if it's more trouble than it's worth, I'll just can the idea.
    Thanks for your input guys.

#1 is not a good reason to do an engine swap, if the engine is not a good fit.
#2 I agree with to a point but I'm a Ford guy through and through but I don't think I'd put a y block in anything other than what it came in. They're a big heavy engine.
Sell the 292 to an old Ford guy and find a nice 302 & save a couple hundred pounds.

I know, I know... :D I’m usually the one saying that.

But I’ve never had an issue with this engine in the 12 hard years I’ve run it, and with its torque curve, it would make such a great Jeep engine. Especially in a plow Jeep, the weight would almost be a benefit.

But like I said, I was first considering this because I thought it would be quick and easy. I’m not really interested in another custom swap at this point.

    .02 more.
Is the bell-housing depth the same?
Is the crank/flywheel dimension-ally accepting to the swap less maybe a custom input bushing?
Can you redrill the bell to accept the T-18 trany?
Do you have the machining resources to make the bearing retainer issue not be an issue?

Answering no to any of these would negate it in my world.

Mighty Mouse is long gone. It was more trouble than was worth putting toward it.
This would be for my 3b plow rig.

I have the input shaft from my t18 if it’s of any use? I’ll have to find out the specs on it

That’s alright. If this happens at this point, it’ll only be because I pulled the truck engine to put something else in and it’s sitting here for me to play with. That would probably be September at the earliest.

I had a 64 F100 that was originally a 2wd. My first truck. It had no engine when I got it. I first put in a 302. Then I wanted it to be original and put in a 223 and a 3 speed. (I worked after school in a junkyard) I drove it for about two months as a 2wd like that and realized how useless 2wd was around here. I then took the running gear from a 4wd 62 Ford from the transmission back (t98). Wow, I was so happy to not get stuck on wet grass. I drove it like that for a few years and then put in a 292 that my Dad rebuilt. He loved the Y blocks, used to have stock cars that he stuck 312 y blocks into. That y block was a darn good powerplant for the cubes.
That's all I have to say about that...
