It’s been a few days since I updated, things were busy with the holidays and work.

I managed to get the front Dana 30 done, regeared to 4.88, and used a Lokka lunchbox locker in. I also machined the 6 bolt drum brake hubs I had to fit the disc rotors and used them.

I changed the rear brakes from the 10” to 11” brakes as well, got everything cleaned up and painted, and bolted back to the chassis.

Thanks, I was pretty happy how it turned out. A LOT better than when I started(y). At least now I’m getting to start bolting stuff back together.

Next on the list is the engine. Gonna re-seal it, as it has a few leaks, and clean and paint it too.

Yesterday after work I had some time, so I pulled the engine apart and did an inspection. Other than needing to be re-sealed, everything was in excellent shape. It definitely doesn’t have many hrs on it.

A couple things on the list for replacement, new timing set, still has the original with plastic gears, and it appears I need a new fuel pump eccentric. After doing a search, I’ve found that it seems to be a common problem for them to wear. Ive found a few available, but was wondering if anyone has repaired one before?

What I was thinking of doing was welding the groove back up, machining it down in the lathe, and putting a stainless steel speedy sleeve on it
Skf has one that should do the trick, part number 99171. Or seeing that it might be difficult to grab it with the lathe, filling the groove with jbweld, and installing the sleeve before it hardens? Might be more trouble than it’s worth though I suppose, if decent replacements are available?

Well, I’m on hold for the engine re-assembly, waiting for some parts, hopefully they’ll be in in the next few days. Good news is I have a good fuel pump eccentric now. I pulled the timing cover off the 225 I have in one of the parts jeeps, and the one in it was in excellent shape.:)

So seeing how I couldn’t get the engine back together, I decided to get after coming up with a way to work on the body tub.

After scrounging through my steel collection, I fabbed up the tub turner nine thousand. Very happy with how it turned out, should make my life a lot easier when it comes time for the body repairs.

How do your brake and clutch pedals mount? I suspect that you have a 72 and later tub on a 71 and earlier v6 frame.

Yeah, the tub is from a 73. This Jeep had a cj3a body hacked onto it when I got it, so I’m changing it back to a cj5 using a few donor jeeps.

I intended on doing the hanging pedals with hydraulic clutch and relocate the master cylinder to the firewall anyway, so I figured the later tub would work better for me. And the other early body’s I have are all in terrible shape. This one isn’t great either, but it is by far the best.

I have a couple sets of the later pedal assembly’s, but I’ve been looking at the Roxor setup and may just go that route.

It’s been a few days, but made a little progress on the Jeep. Got the engine re-assembled, and got some paint sprayed on it.

Had a buddy stop by, so I put him to work and we got the engine set in the chassis, put the new clutch in, and got the trans and tcase bolted up. Looking good now!

Hopefully if the weather is nice tomorrow I’m gonna get the tub out and do some sandblasting. There were a few areas underneath that had been sprayed with rockguard in the past that I managed to get scraped off in prep for the media blasting. Definitely not a fun job:banghead:

I brainstormed on a rotisserie, but just couldn't come up with a plan~ yours is right on! and I really like the shocks, and darn, I just like everything you're doin!~ ;)

I just put this tub on its side on furniture casters, but sigh, a rotisserie would have been nice;)

Thank you. I had injured my back several years ago, and had to come up with someway to move it around and reduce the risk of re-injury.

How did you get your tub so clean? Is it media blasted? I’m just in the process of doing mine and find I can’t get the metal as clean as that in the areas with surface rust.

Edit - now that I look closer it looks to be in primer, right?

Good morning Bandit;) sorry to hear about your back being injured, I myself injured my back in '93 when lifting a patient (physical therapist assistant here), so I totally understand. That's probably why I have so many lifting type things, you know, Brains over Brawn? lol
Anyway, the pic below is my brother using a northern Tools media blaster which connects to your 3-4k pressure washer. Using a crushed glass media also from Northern Tools, the system works well, makes a mess, but strips old crap off quite quickly. We didn't strip it down to metal completely, but the bottom of the jeep tub is impossible to sand in a conventional manner. Crushed glass 50lb bags are about 5-6 dollars. We blasted a lot of stuff. I was worried about flash rusting, but we blew it off rather quickly and I got to epoxy coating pretty quickly.
but I was thinking(an after thought here), there is a place to hook up a line, like soap per se, to hook up as blasting a diluted solution of phosphoric acid towards the end of blasting to provide a flash rust prevention? I bought a gallon of phosphoric acid from amazon pretty cheaply, or may have been eBay. Otherwise, I didn't use it at all and all was well.
    I hope this helps! ;)

So I managed to get a some of the dirty work done in the last few days. I pulled the tub outside and media blasted it with crushed glass. Dirty job, and far from enjoyable, but at least now I can start on the metal work and get the body patched up.

I’m sure glad I got it done when I did, I woke up this morning and it was -26 deg f outside, and supposed to only get colder for the next few weeks. Yay.....
Only a couple days ago it was 18 deg f

The one bonus to the cold weather is that there is zero humidity, so I don’t have to worry about flash rusting.

Wow, that came out pretty good, really exposed some bad areas, but it clean now. How many bags of media did it take? My first time using crushed glass, but what happens to the used crushed glass? I have two 5 gallon buckets of recovered media and I don't really know what to do with it~ guess I could strain it and save it.
    However, you're making progress!! yay!
